He actually competed in the Nagano Olys. The story behind it is quite intriguing, too. From what I understand he was more or less coerced into participating in the pairs event - he's originally a singles skater - as the JSF wanted their two spots for the men's event to be represented by Takeshi and Yamato Tamura. Why? Because both Takeshi and Yamato had better results than Amano both internationally + at Nats which had a lot to do with the simple fact that they both had the 3A in their jump arsenal (IIRC Takeshi was already practicing the quad around this time), while Amano didn't. As for the actual pairs competition at Nagano...well, let's just say Amano and his partner bombed and came in dead last. Sweatdrop

Illani, Yukari was lowballed in PCS but I remember she was also quite prone to UR's. I guess maybe it was the leg wrap but I thought her jumps had nice flow.

I always thought her jumps had nice flow too. IDK, I'll have to go back and watch some of her programs. It's obvious that some skaters are far more scrutinized than others for URs, edge calls, etc. Rolling Eyes

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how many tech specialists the ISU has? And how they are selected for the competitions—is it random draw, or what? (It's probably totally just a psychological thing because we dislike him so much, but it seems like recently Amano keeps turning up like a bad penny.)

As for our dear Mao, I am proud of what she was able to achieve this year in spite of her troubles...namely

a) medaling in the world's most competitive nationals

b) medaling at 4cc with a higher score than what any lady at worlds received

c) making top six in the world (which Rachael Flatt would probably give anything to be in right now) with a score that would have won her most of the grand prix events

Thank you for that. Many Hearts We must remember to focus on the positive!

you're welcome, illani Dance Now I can hardly wait for fall and the new season...so Mao can shed that depressing tango and at least she'll have nothing to lose next time around...

Quotes from Mao and Kanako from Japan Today:

‘‘It wasn’t my 100 percent, but I did the best I could,’’ Asada said. ‘‘I’ve been working on my triple axel for a long time, so I wanted to nail it, though.’‘

Sixteen-year-old Kanako Murakami (167.10), the other Japanese in the competition, was eighth in her first world championships.

‘‘I feel bad because I didn’t do well enough as a representative of Japan,’’ Murakami said. ‘‘I want to learn from this experience and bounce back next season.’’

........................................
Poor Kana-chan. She shouldn't feel bad, it was her first senior worlds. Yep! She's still so young, like eight years younger than Miki...(?)

I'm glad that Mao realizes that she did all she could...

Didn't do well enough? What???
Look at what those miserable judges did to this girl!

You did great, Kana-chan. Don't let them put you down. No

On another note, I'm glad Mao acknowledges her own effort too. It's important for her improvement.

This story tells a lot.
Could he be taking revenge at JSF?

That does make a lot of sense now....

I think there's a chance that he could be doing this on a subconcious level because seeing a female skater do a jump he couldn't is too much for him to bear. There's a saying that the harshest critics are the ones who couldn't quite achieve the level of the actual artist/athlete and their negativity partly stems from the agony of their own unfulfilled dreams. ^ Yes, I think the man has a bad case of 3A envy. Twisted Evil (And come to think of it, maybe that was his problem with Yukari as well?)

But tbh, I think alyssa may be onto something with the revenge on the JSF thing, because clearly Kana-chan felt his wrath as well. Yep, Sadly

I also can't get over how Mao was so underscored in PCS. It's beyond ridiculous that she is placed below the two Russian girls. scratch She and Alissa should be placed higher. IMO. And I would have had her PCS equal or a little above Alissa's. Alissa was more involved in her program but she skated really slow. Mao did appear weak but surprisingly her speed was alright.

I don't think this bode well for Mao in the future. It seems Miki is now replacing Mao's place in the judges' view. I fear she's no longer regarded highly by them due to her inconsistencies. Even if she skates well like in 4CC/Worlds last year, she only gets in the low 60s range. Sad

[left]
yeonah forum troll here Smile nice to meet everybody.

冗談 just kidding! i am not here to troll. i have grown to love mao also, this season, because of the liebestraum program. i am a shallow person who likes light ethereal skating, and among the current ladies nobody does that better than mao. i know mao herself may not even like such an image, that type of skating, and a lot of people here want mao to get a fresh start and scrap the program that made me fall in love with mao. after all the turmoils of this year, i must agree a fresh start would be beneficial to mao. even when i was less torn and more fully for yeonah--say, last year--i had to admire mao for charting her own course, having her own artistic vision and going against the voices of people like me who want her to shed that 'bells' program and go back to something like 'nocturne'. i especially admire her _this year_ for committing to the difficult path of re-building her technique, fighting through a lot of adversity--all this before the devastating earthquake and tsunamis even struck japan.

i wish mao all the best. the judging mystifies me, too, so i will refrain from commenting much--after all i've been disagreeing with the judges since 1994. skaters like mao, daisuke, and yes, yeonah are why i'm still watching skating, even after it's changed from one crappy judging system to another.

if mao decides to keep liebestraum i would not feel sad. if she decides to go with a new long program i would support that also.

what finally brought me out of lurkdom is your question about yeonah's spiral and the burst of applause. speaking only for myself, because i have no idea what the audience is thinking in moscow, i broke out in spontaneous applause when i saw that moment on youtube, because looking at the layback in the giselle program, i had not expected that yeonah's stretch on the arirang spiral free leg would be so much better than last year's. the foot is actually much more pointed than in the previous season. she's not lifting the leg up as high, but another of my favorite ladies, ekaterina gordeeva, has a beautiful spiral that isn't hiked up to 90 degrees either. i consider that a great improvement, proof that there was fruit to that picture of peter oppegard grabbing yeonah's foot and placing it in the correct position when she first started taking from him. not to say she's close to mao in terms of turn out and such, but each of these ladies has many qualities i love about her skating. heck, i love kostner and miki too-- again, i say nothing about the judging. remember, i am still mad about 94 and 98 olympics Smile

well, i'll say that i wish the judging wouldn't pour fuel on the fire, make relations between yeonah fans and mao fans even more problematic. i like both skaters, many skaters, and i am very happy for miki, very glad that japanese fans got to hear the anthem playing at this displaced world championship. i also think it's a beautiful gesture that yeonah is donating her prize money to UNICEF to help children in need in japan [regrettably i am too lazy to find a link for this--i just read it on the yeonah forum].

i hope to see mao more energetic and robustly built and smiling from the heart as only mao can--very soon, i hope.

Someone on FSU just posted that Camerlengo said in an interview that it's his dream to work with Mao. Wub He hopes to work with her in
the future.

This just made my day! Camerlengo is one of the choreographers that I wanted Mao to work with for a long time! His works for Dai is just fabulous and his freeskate for Alissa was wonderful. I hope Mao gets to work with him in the near future. Yep!

clovera I appreciate the very interesting and revealing info on Amano. I usually try to keep my cool about these things. Argh! This time, I am pissed. His downgrades are deliberate and against the rules! I ‘m almost tempted to make a voodoo doll of him and prick him with needles. Evil or Very Mad Just kidding!

If Amano has an axe to grind with the JSF for what has been speculated here, the man must be delusional. If he expected to be competitive, he needed to master the 3A. Since he couldn’t and ended up skating pairs, he should be thankful that he was given the opportunity to be a part of the Olympics (despite his lack of talent). It may all just be an inferiority complex.

aoi88 Thank you for the news on Camerlengo. Dai is my favorite male skater. So, I’ve seen some TV footage of Camerlengo working with Dai. I wonder what he can do for Mao. I hope she decides to work with Camerlengo. If it is a dream of his to work with Mao, he must already have some ideas. This is exciting! To be someone’s dream… How flattering!

Tarasova should choreograph Mao's gala programs. Those are great! I mean no disrespect to Tat but she should stay away from her competitive programs. No wardrobe advice from her either! Mao needs to fire her costume designer.

I'm sorry I've been absent for a while. I wanted to get away because I felt so bad for Mao. Also, I chose not to search her name in Google because I know so many newspapers that are biased would show up. (sigh) I finally came back. Lol! Actually, that was my suspicion. I looked up a while ago, and I saw his figure skating history. It wasn't as much as Mao. You're right though. Maybe it is his subconscious mind. Golly. If I was a Japanese representative, I would have spoken up by now! Even if it's hard, isn't that what courage is all about? Taking action on what you believe is correct, no matter how fearful it might be?

I'm not really sure of how the scoring would go. But Yuna's flip is never on an inside edge. It's usually slightly on the outside or on a straight edge. That's why she changed the entry so that her ankle wouldn't curve as much.

i am so confused what constitutes a lip? can a flip be considered a lip if it is a straight edge or does it have to be an outside edge to be a lip?

shar, tatiana's choreography is interesting. she brings out the passion and diva in mao in her exhibitions yet not in her competitive programs. this is the ultimate mystery of figure skating, because no other skater can outdo mao's exhibitions and tatiana's work is genius. i wonder why tatiana doesn't take this same approach to mao's programs... such a pity.

I`m so proud of Miki - she won over Kim. king
Kanako should take a quick progress to her skating to be able fight with judges. Shocked

The only one thing that allows me to stay calm about Mao is that she is in good hands.
I mean both Shizuka & Miki are former Sato`s students.
I`m happy to read about Kamerlengo. flower

I've read most of the Japanese news articles there is on Mao.
It turns out that Mao had parted with her trainer (I think it's the guy from Weider who was doing her muscle trainings; Makino), and had been trying to control her weight on her own. As a result, she said she thinks she dropped some weight (about 4kg) too suddenly, and that took power out of her performances. She said 'I think I was too stoic. I lost too much weight in too short a time', and Sato revealed she was in no condition to try a 3A at all, but it seems Mao herself wanted to try the 3As no matter how much he suggested she should stick to a 2A this time. Mao says she had been practicing to jump a 3A this entire season, so she couldn't give it up.

http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20110501-00000037-spn-spo

Other articles have mentioned she had been suffering some stomach aches, had been having trouble eating, and the main reason she was in bad shape at Worlds was because she couldn't reset her condition after Worlds had been moved to April, without a specialist trainer. So it seems that Mao really meant she had performed the best she could at this point like she said in the interview right after her FP.

Considering all this, I think she did pretty well in such terrible condition; she didn't fall or pop that much, and Sato said he thought Mao pretty much delivered at least an average level peformance in ladies. So, maybe if there was no earthquake and Worlds had been held in Tokyo as planned, she might have done much better. We'll never know if that would've been the case, but we know now that dieting on ones' own is extremely dangerous...all this reminded me of when Midori Ito decided to go on a strict diet in the end of her competing career. She too thought she can manage it on her own, failed and ended up losing lots of energy. She had confessed some years later that she had totally messed up her health, and wasn't even sure if she had enough stamina to skate her FP to the end.

I don't know why she parted with Makino, but I seriously hope he'd return or Mao would hire someone else to care for her weight and conditioning. Mao is the kind of person who would push herself into the extreme if not guided by others I think. Although that's one of the reasons she became who she is today, it's also a very dangerous weak point. At the same time, I think Sato should've made her put an end to her diet much sooner, so I hope he will be alert on such risks she might try to take from now on. No

ETA:But I know from experience that it's only after you start losing 4~5kg that people around you start noticing you're losing weight. I think this time, when Sato and the others noticed what she was doing, it was probabaly too late... Sad

Pochi, now I'm really worried. How could she do it? We know Midori did this and the result was terrible. Sato-sensei, please solve this! Drama!

well that atleast explaines why mao looked like she did, I just am shocked to hear that they didn't notice sooner.. and for an atlet like mao who works veryhard it's really dangerous not to have someone who can look after you're condition.... I really hope that mao has leraned from this experience that she can't control her weight on her own, and there hires a new or the same person again..

do you think that the articles are going to reveil wheter mao hires a new one soon. since I can't bear to think about mao not having anyone who could help her, when it comes to such an important matter.
