cheers Hi Pochi! Thank you for sharing all of the most recent Mao news. pale I am very worried about her. Is she no longer being sponsored by Weider? They provided her a nutritionist and a personal trainer right? If she no longer has that kind of support, she needs to hire some new people. For now, who cares! I just hope that she gets checked out by a doctor and takes a break. I just want her to be happy and healthy.

Ah this competition has not been kind to my poor nerves....why can’t I root for the judges’ pets? That would be a lot better for my health. Anyway some of my thoughts of the ladies competition…long rant varning mostly repeating other members’ opinions:

Mao
Regarding everything that has happened in Japan, having Worlds moved, changing technique, new coach and the weight loss, I think she did very well. The results at this competition will only motivate her.

Her SP costume, not that bad. Don’t mind the red “life vest” but I hate the red strings dangling from it, looks like red long pubic hair….urgh! The tango SP had potential despite the repetitive music but she never seemed into it. I would still love Mao to skate another tango in the future.

I would like her to get a new LP as well. Lieberstraum is beautiful but I’m not crazy about it … maybe I find the music a bit boring or like someone said it’s a bit predictable. Mao can skate to all sorts of music, next season I would like her to skate to something grand or epic(not as depressing as Bells) or fun and flirty(Czardas it still my favorite Mao LP). Please Mao try a new choreographer!!!

So jealous of polosatik!!! I wanna watch Mao compete live, but it might be too nerve-wracking. I was too nervous to watch the livestream, I had to calm myself by watching Mao’s LP from Worlds last year while she was skating.

Yuna
I like the LP music, but choreography and performance nothing special. Her flip is a lip. She sort of does a skid mark from the outside edge in the takeoff, a flip should make an inside edge curve mark or a straight line am I right? Hope some specialist in the future will be brave enough to give it an edge call. Not a textbook jump. Her 3z is huge, but so is Miki’s. Her 3-3 is nice, but she has no speed or flow after the second jump, borderline rotated. So actually, when she lands them, Kostner’s 3f+3t is better. Sorry for bashing, Yuna is a very talented skater, but this overscoring is frustrating.

Miki
There’s a wonderful quality to her skating that I haven’t noticed until this season. Wonderful jumps. Too bad she only did 2a+2t cause her 2a+3a is just gorgeous, best in the business! She should try to do a 3z+3t. She fixed her lip a couple of seasons ago, why doesn’t she try it in competition? That could boost her PCS or does she have troubles with that jump? Anyway so glad she won, Japan must be very proud of her.

Carolina Kostner
I used to think she’s being held up by the judges, she probably is a little. But after following figure skating a couple of seasons, I now really appreciate her speed, edges, the way she stretches her body, flow out of jumps(when she lands them) , how she stretches her free leg and holds the edge after a jump as well. She’s great at step sequences. Kostner’s SP is my favourite SP this season. I’m secretly hoping that she will be World champion one day.

Alissa
Such a beautiful skater and insanely talented spinner too bad she couldn’t hold it together in the LP. At least she has a GPF gold medal and is the 2 times national champion before she retires!

Yeah so the scoring at this completion might be a joke, but placements are more important than “world records”. I haven’t watched all the skates so I can’t say if I think the top 5 placements were correct. And that Amano guy…well he can s*** it! Should we start some sort of campaign to get him fired? Honestly all the ISU judges should be fired.

BTW
Taka-chan did a 3a in the exhibition!

So sad, that Mao is not in the Exhibition!

Yuna skated to Bulletproof, she looks so uninspired and tired, landed 3 2axels. Swedish commentator said that she has never seen a silver medalist looking so disapointed and sad on the podium.

LOL at Nathalie Péchalat and Fabian Bourzat ex "George of the Djungle"!

They should have invited all the japanese skaters to take part at the exhibition in honor for them because of the earthquake!

Poor Mao, I hope she rests and take care of her !! She needs to!

Great post ClairDeMao! I enjoyed reading all of your opinions. I am jealous of polosatik too! I loved her banner. She is so talented. I also couldn't watch the live stream. I was too nervous. I wore myself out and fell asleep. When I woke up it was all over. Laughing

She parted with her trainer? I'm worried. Crying or Very sad Going on a crash diet by yourself is really dangerous. I hope Mao recovers in the off-season. But maybe getting a different trainer is a good thing because I am one of those that felt Mao has become more thin ever since she joined Weider. Just my opinion.

Oh, I'm also hearing from FSU that there are talks about Russian coaches being restricted from going to direct competitors of their own country's skaters. I'm not sure if this also applies to choreographers, but if so, this could mean an end to Mao and TAT pairing since the Russian girls are coming up. (This could turn out for the better)

ETA: The wonderful Kumaneko translated several articles that talks about Mao's condition at Worlds. Smile

http://kumaneko037.blog103.fc2.com/

After reading this, I am concerned about Mao's 3A mindset. I understand why she still goes for it no matter what (it's like Dai and his quad) but it's inevitable that the technical content of ladies skaters will be forced to die down as they age. I think there's a possiblity that Mao may not sustain her 3A till Sochi. If it does happen, I fear it could be so demoralizing that she would even consider retirement since the 3A is so integral to her skating.

Pang and Tong
They have been doing this sort of exhibition for years…white clothes, dramatic opera music. They to it well, but maybe it’s time for something new?!

Miki
Emotional, very elegant, skated to ”Why do People fall in Love” and then to “Requiem”.

Don’t know what happened to Adrian, he been depressed this entire season! Poor Adrian didn’t even qualify to the long, he fell on his lutz, did a step out efter the 3a and fell on the step sequence in the SP. I haven’t read any interviews from him after the men’s short, so I have no idea what’s going on. Hope he isn’t injured. He’s too talented to retire!

I agree. I always thought this program looks as if someone choreographed it within 5 minutes, but thanks to her expression she could entertain audience. Today this program was completely emotionless...

Her reaction on her silver medal reminds me of Mao in Vancouver, I hope the next season will be better for them both.

Did Yuna make any statement about her future career? Will she still compete?

I'm glad I'm not the only one. My favorite ladies skater is Mao, but a nice portion of my heart has always belonged to Ms. Kostner's skating. So I wouldn't mind that if Mao would be unable to win a certain World Championship for whatever reason, that Caro would deliver and grab it. Better her than certain other skaters for my personal satisfaction of the competition. Too sweet!

As for Adrian, I've heard that he's had if rough this season. I've heard he's been really depressed and has considered retiring. I don't remember all the details so I can't say the reason. I just hope he's not injured. Yep, Sadly

In Yuna forum they discuss about her retirement should be posponed, because she should represent Korea for Olympia as an active skater! I wish, the ppl would stop using her for their own business and would let her relax finally!

Sorry for not replying right away to all the responses to my post concerning Mao's diet situation and bad condition...like alyssa, since Midori's dieting experience was so famous here, I never thought Mao would try anything stupid like that too, so I was very surprised about her not having someone to look after her conditions and stuff. Sad

I think Weider is still supporting Mao, but they don't have their short weekly programs on how Mao is doing after last season, and come to think of it, I haven't seen Makino in the videos they've uploaded in the Weider site anymore. I'm not so sure how much the Weider team is involved with Mao right now. But if they are still working with her, they haven't been doing their job correctly for sure. Take a look at the video in this page:

http://www.weider-jp.com/supportproject/mao_asada/index.html

This is a very ironic video they've uploaded in the Weider site, because the people who seem to be in charge of Mao this season, a trainer guy named Yoshida and a nutritionist named Matsuzaki are actually talking about how they intend to get Mao to peak her condition in late April. In some of the parts you will find Makino training with her, but those are obviously scenes from last season and not recent ones. Yoshida says in this video that the changing of the dates for Worlds would be very difficult for Mao to adjust to, and in order for her to create a peak in her condition for the new schedule, Mao has to lower her condition once and then bring it back up again. According to him, peak conditions never last long, so he claims it's absolutely necessary for her to train harder for a while and lower her condition, and that would gradually bring her back in shape again. So, I guess that's what they've been trying to do this month. On the other hand, Matsuzaki spoke mostly about what kind of meals Mao should eat in order not to stack up exhaustion while doing this, and her advice was that she should eat as usual making no sudden changes in her diet. But she also mentioned that Mao needs to keep her weight under control during the extra month which popped in until Worlds. I guess she meant that Mao should simply keep her figure as it is.

According to this video, Yoshida and Matsuzaki both speak as if they've been working on Mao's condition this past month side by side. This is strange because the papers are writing that Mao was training on her own. So, I really don't understand how much of a part these 2 Weider experts have been playing in Mao's training. Maybe they just advised her to do what they mentioned in this video, and let her prepare on her own. In any case this video itself has become a confession in a way, on how responsible they were about her conditioning. I suspect that they didn't actually spend much time with Mao, but just advised a few things and then just let her do the rest alone, which might've been the biggest problem here because Yoshida himself first admitted that it would be very difficult for Mao to peak during the new Worlds schedule. Whatever the case was, the fact is that Mao had a trainer and nutritionist by her side who both overlooked her losing some weight and energy. Or maybe they actually made her do so in order to create a bad condition so she can peak again, but they or she over did it, and the new peak never came. Anyway, they messed her up one way or another IMO. They are definitely partly responsible for all this. Evil or Very Mad

It seems like almost every skater at some point in ther competitive career has that "skate of their lives", even inconsistent skaters. I'm sill waiting for Carolina's, hopefully it will happen at a World Championship. Very Happy

Pochi, thanks for the shedding some light to Mao's condition.

Ugh, I feel so mad now. I had my doubts about the Weider team before but I didn't expect it to be this bad. Disappointed Is Matsuzaki the same advisor who was a former beauty contestant? Something's definitely wrong about Mao's training since 2009-2010. If we compare her photos from 2008 to recent ones, the change in her weight is pretty drastic. I'm really worried for her health now. Yep, Sadly

Tong Jian was sitting next to my friend. He talked to his friend about Mao. He said that Mao is just too tired after Olympics. He didn't see any problem in Mao's ability. So I guess this could make us sort of relieved.

Completely agree. I was never a fan of this number, but last year at least she sold it. Today it looked like she didn't want to be there, but was forced.

I really think the post-olympic stress has affected both Yuna and Mao!

I watched many early programs on YT and both skaters had a single dream - 2010 Olympics!
Its like they started their senior season with that in their minds!
Yuna went through early injuries - Mao's growth spurt - They both went through so much!
So much hard work in becoming the champions in their own countries...
and then came the Olympics!
Frankly - if you had to choose the most hard working skaters in 2010 -
It would have been Mao and Yuna! And it was obvious - One would have to lose for the other to grab gold!
Unfortunately - Mao's path was much more difficult and she couldn't bring it out at 100%!
But still she skated fiercely! She left me in awe -
These two skaters made the world bow in respect - and they won!

Now that its all over!
The motivational urge seems gone! - Its like when you take a huge exams/competition and you ace it! When its over - You feel a bit lax - You forget those simple things you used to master...
When you try to re-do the same things - Well it becomes very difficult to do it easily!
Yuna went through an initial block - 2010 worlds - Mao did not initially felt the load because she still had that fire inside her of not winning gold! And she gave it all at worlds 2010!
However, going through so much training and change of self - It must have tired her out!
She never gave up that Olympics mindset streak she was in...
For Yuna - Even a year break and training was not enough -
She had to eventually come back from an Olympic Gold to settle down and concentrate and believe me - Its not easy at all!...
With all the stress, national pressure culminating at the end of 2010 on her shoulders - She did what she had to do -
It's like you come at end of a marathon - and you got to take back again from where you left...

I know we talk of Sochi 2014! >.<
But for both skaters - Its so far!...

Why is Mao not skating in the EX?! -_-
Are only the top 5 allowed to skate?

Thank you Pochi for the news. I am a little relieved but also mad at the stupidity of the situation. Hope to see her soon happy and fat Hell, no!

About Yuna - there are reports that she was in pain during her exhibition, ankle injury or something like that, that would explain her sad look.

Thank you for the news, pochiand tianrushui! flower

I'm thankful to hear about other athletes being understanding of Mao's situation.

Here is another wonderful moment on TV:

Like a Star @ heaven http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4ex_EqXIZ0

Yamada-sensei waiting on the side in the mixed zone for Murakami when Mao walks over and they hugged each other. Many Hearts

Strangely moved when saw this final scene which shows Mao walking in the corridors, repeating, "Otsukaresamadeshita", a phrase used to o acknowledge someone’s efforts or show your appreciation for the trouble that they have gone through (explanation taken from this link: http://www.ragekrantz.com/?p=113). Probably to the Japanese media who have been following her at Worlds around for reports/interviews.

The tired but happily relieved look on Mao's face; how everyone repeated the same phrase back to Mao in response, "Ostukaresama!" , "Ostukaresamadeshita" and Arakawa Shizuka's smile when she saw the clip - all left me rather emotional. It was such a long and difficult ride but she pressed in and made it till the very end.

Mao, Ostukaresamadeshita! Thank you for this courageous and uplifting season. Love Hearts

aoi, babayaga...I too think Weider should be more causious about what they're making Mao do. I don't know if Matsuzaki is the former beauty contestant, but I simply liked Kokoro-san who was her nutritionist last season better. Same for the trainer, too. Kokoro and Makino spent a whole season with Mao already so they know her better, and by now they know better about FS too. The new advisors are specialists in sport too, but I think it's their first time to advise a skater, and FS is a sport which demands quite a few different things from an athlete compared to other sports. I basically think having the Weider staff by Mao's side is good, but they have to know more about the sport themselves in order to be sure they're giving the right advice to Mao. And if their ideas of peaking at the right time is the most important thing for Mao in order to win, she'll never be able to become a stable skater who can deliver a certain level of performance in any condition. No

For me Yuna looked almost angry, really mad and not sad, I had a bad feeling to see her like this, I just hope it's not because of her placement, that would be a childish reaction I don't want her to make exuses everytime she's not skating well...
Miki made me cry she was very emotionally invested in her exhibition programm more than usual. But Daisuke was the best today I just love his "Amelie" number. And of course I missed Mao's ballade Crying or Very sad but I think she should rest for now.

Thanks zarinaballerina! Smile
Glad Mao is not here!
She needs to rest! Smile

I am also a bit tired of the excuse made by team Yuna everytime she seems to have a lil issue!
Obviously - most of the times - her fans make such excuses -
And the excuses travel from forum to forum -
(Rem how Brian was frank about her SP at worlds 2010 - see how elegantly team Yuna dumped him out)

No links for the EX? Sad
Seriously - worlds this year was in such a atmosphere of gloom! Neutral

http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2011/05/01/gazo/G20110501000735400.html
0O Okay its sad to see her cry after all!
Miki should have hugged her - What's with Yuna not being friendly with other skaters...scratch
