I am not surprised either that Mao is again and still on top of the survey list. She really has this something that attracts so many people. She's honest, simple, hard worker, doesn't say bad things about others, mentally very strong....everything I wish I could be.

ballerinamao and ddmm I agree with both of you.

I have never heard her making ANY excuses for performances that weren't good. Heck she never even publicly said she was injured. She always has only kind words for other competitiors and never complains. She's a real treasure. Love Hearts

I hope she'll have an amazing season. cheers

A good "interview" by Keito-chan (11 or 12 years old), a karate kid
who respects Mao very much.

Here's a news clip with just the practice clip cut out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-VMJVsg2Lk I love you

I think Swan Lake suits Mao perfectly! (I still hope she will skate to Madam Butterfly one day, though. Yep! )

I'm really curious what the jumping layout is going to be... She has really little preparation going into that 3L, so I guess it's going to remain as the opening jump? I wonder if Mao gave up on 3A for now, or moved it somewhere later in the program... I wouldn't mind a 3A-less skate, but she was talking recently about still pursuing it, so I'm really curious where she would put it if she wanted to attempt it!

She was also doing 3L-2L. I wonder if that's for SP, LP, or just for practice. Question JO can't arrive soon enough! cyclops

SWAN LAKE!! YES! cheers Dance Love I've been dreaming for years this music for Mao and now it'll be her program! Thank you! Boogie I think it'll be fantastic: TAT is Russian, and Russia is the ballet country, so I hope the choreography will suit the music really well, I think it'll be something really "classical"!
About her jumps, the 3Lo seems an opening jump (it reminds me of Kostner last season... maybe it's now Mao's turn to win Worlds with an opening 3Lo? Cheering ) and I think that, if the 3A is not the opening jump, it won't be in the program, and I'm happy about it: 7 "safe" triples with a 3-3 it's enough, I think! ROTFLMAO She also did 3Lo+2Lo in the clip... However, I'm still hoping the SP combo will be 3F+3Lo...
Japan open in 6 days! Good luck!

Yay! Swan Lake!!! I'm so excited Swoon Swoon

And I'm really curious about the jump layout too... I don't think Mao's opening jump has ever been anything but an Axel... This is interesting!

Can someone tell me what is 'Ko-re-o Spiral' ? Mao says in the interview that the new rules require skaters to put this new element into the program. From TAT's recent interview, it must be one of the new rules added during summer (why in summer ? stupid!) and why Mao had to fly back to Russia to remake her program.

How about using Madame Butterfly for Oly's FP, now that would be perfect. Yep!
I don't think Mao is going for 3A later in the program, unless she became super consistent on it during the summer. I'd love to see her do 3F-3T instead of the combo with the loop, because if a certain tech specialist idiot is going to be at worlds yet again, you know he'll downgrade it. Mad

ddmm, choreographic sequence is a new rule that according to TAT a canadian coach came up with, to make the judging easier, because apparently the judges had difficulties telling apart between a spiral sequence and footwork. Rolling Eyes Whirly
The new rule is that footwork (step sequence) must come BEFORE the choreographic sequence. Choreo sequence must include at least 2 spirals (for at least 6 seconds), the sequence itslef can be of any duration and skaters can choose any elements (ina bauer, spread aeagle...) but must cover a cedrtain amount of the rink. Hope this helps.

I think she was talking about the Choreo Sequence, made of one spiral and moves in the field, which will replace the Choreo Spirals in Ladies and Pairs and the Choreo Step in Men.
Can anyone give us a translation of what they said in the clip? Question Thank you!

Mao's referring to choreographic sequence, which replaced the spiral sequence this summer. It's basically a sequence of moves in the field (spirals, steps, Ina Bauers, hudroblading, spreadeagles, etc.) that covers the ice in any pattern the skaters wants.

The idea is actually great, because it allows the skater to execute the moves they are the best at: if someone has a great Biellman spiral, they can do it, but if someone suffers from back pains, they can do spread eagles, Ina Bauers with no layback or fan spirals with hand assist. I always felt sorry fr skaters like Miki who were forced to do awkward catchfoot spirals when it just hurt them.

However, fr some reason the ISU officials made the requirement that the choreo sequence MUST follow the step sequence, which is just stupid! I guess this is why Mao had to modify her program: I guess this time her spiral sequence was in the middle of the program and they couldn't just swap it with the choreographic sequence.

IMHO it's really easy to tell the sequences apart; I watched a lot of programs choreographed after the rule change and I never had trouble guessing which sequence is which (and the judges should have even easier job because they have an access to the planned elements list). As TAT said in the interview recently, if the judges can't tell required step sequence from the choreographic one, maybe they should just stay at home. Twisted Evil

Yeah. Choreo Spiral is something best at the end of the music with Lori's Liebestraum.
That was so fantastic to me, when I saw the sequence was different from other skaters.
But it did not suit most of the music well as we saw that most of skaters had Choreo Spiral
at the mid of the music, also to most of Tarasova's choreography.

It seems like a dirty game to push skaters to bring step sequences to the mid of the
music and feel exhausted with that and fail to the rest jumps. I think this is not good
because most of step sequence is set to the end when the music come to climax like
Arakawa's Turandot, Mao's Masquerade or Yuna's Scheherazade.

I agree with you, BowbowDaijin. There were even great programs that started with the spiral sequence (like Michelle's Romanza). Especially now, when the skaters can use spreadeagles and other MITFs as well, it could have looked interesting and innovative if the choreo sequence was placed early in the program.
It all depends on the music, IMHO. In some cases spirals at the end can look lovely (like in Mao's Liebenstraume), but forcing everyone to do it after the required steps will just make programs more boring... I hope they will change this rule soon!

Not since she was a novice, but she did 3A late in the program in many of her Galas. Smile

That would be cool! Smile

She was planning 3A past halfway through the program in 2010 (although she swapped it around with 2A-3T later on).

Actually, I wouldn't think it weird if she skipped 3A for now, but in a recent interview she said that she was still planning on putting it in a program, so I'd thought there would be at least theoretical space reserved for 3A in the program. And I don't think it could just replace 3L, there's not enough room to gain speed before it even if the transitions were chucked out. Sweatdrop

Actually, the clip made me wonder if she was planning on attempting the combo eventually... That 3L-2L looked like it was incorporated into the choreography, but if she did it, she'd have 2 triples repeated (the other one being most likely 3F), so she could not attempt 3F-3L, and getting a 3-3 consistent was one of her goals... So maybe she'll start with "easier" jump layout like this:

3L
2A-3T
3Lz
3F-2L-2L
3L-2L
3S
3F

But maybe aim for:
3L
3F-3T
3Lz
2A-2L-2L
3L-2L
3S
3F

or:

3L
3A
3Lz
3F-3T
3L-2L-2L
3S
3F

Or maybe the loops were just to warm up and I'm over-analysing things... geek

IC! thank you guys for the information.
TAT is so right !
Me neither, I've never had any trouble making the difference.
But to be honest, with all the rules changing, I'm confused...

I like the second layout, she'd just have to replace 1 triple with the mandatory 2A.

Yeah, following all the changes is really confusing. I don't think they should made any changes one year before Sochi. Very Mad

Imagine how skaters, choreographers and coaches must feel with constant rule changes. Whirly
And I agree, those judges who can't tell the difference (or aren't certain) between step seq and spirals have no business judging figureskating competitions.

Sooooo excited about this announcement! This is one of the songs I've always wanted Mao to skate to most, but never expected her to actually choose it. I especially didn't expect it this season since Ashley's swan lake program just last season made such a big splash. My only complaint is that this is not an olympic season, and I would like to see her skate to this at the olympics. It's not unusual for Mao to reuse programs though, so I'm hoping she reuses this one. The swan queen is a perfect role for Mao!!

Can anyone translate what Mao and Sato said in the video? At least the important parts?

Yes, that was a great program. Too bad she let Robin Wagner change the choreo after she left TAT.
I just remembered, imagine Mao's already insanely good footwork with gorgeous Tchaikovsky's music Swoon , I can't wait for Japan Open! Boogie

Ashley skated to the Black Swan soundtrack. It's Tchaikovsky but it's a bit different arrangement than the music taken out of ballet. Ashley's program was good, but she's not a "balletic" skater, while Mao and ballet is a dream come true, IMO. Ashley doesn't have the lines and flexibility that Mao has, which is perfect if you're portraying a swan. Yep!

I like that she chose Swan Lake this year, because I bet there will be a lot of Black Swan/Swan Lake programs in Sochi. Now if she'll choose Puccini for Sochi I'll die of happiness. Cloud 9

This is the only thing that I worry about, so far TAT had more misses than hits, imo. pale I hope the costume won't be covered in feathers and for the love of everything holy, please no bra.

Hehe Smile As long as there won't be actual feathers in Mao, I'm OK with anything. Polosatik is right - clean jumps is what is most important.

ETA: zarinaballerina, we posted at the same time. I was thinking to mention a bra too at first Smile
