I just watched this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWz30bLzSdE) and noticed how beautiful Mao's 3Lo+3Lo at 1:32 is... She could attempt a 3A/3Lo+3Lo/3F SP next season... Her BV would be the highest ever!

My pick is Jeff. Though it would be great to see what Javi and Mao would do. Yep! Can't wait for the full cast to be announced, I don't think this is it, with no Merly/Charlie and Kanako. scratch

It's nice to see Gracie in the mix.

I don't want her to overtrain, but if she'll be able to pull this off... Shocked affraid I don't see how anyone (even with the ridiculous judging) could come close to her. That's a score well over 80. Faint2

I have a feeling she'll go for 3-3 in the SP next season. Yep! Has she made any announcement wether she's thinking of doing three 3A in the competition again? I hope she'll stick to two 3A.

Mao's 2a-3t has become really good, so who knows, she might go for a 3A 3f-3t 3l SP next season. It would be amazing, but I don't want her to overtrain.

Yes, but EXTREMELY difficult, and we all know that her lutz would always receive an "e", so it would be at least 0.70 point automatically lost...

This is why I don't see her putting 3Lz in her SP. She's trying to rework it, so I doubt she's comfortable enough with the Lutz, to put it in the SP. But I do think she'll put a 3-3 in her SP next season so it'll be interesting to see what kind of layout she'll choose.
What about:
3A, 3F-3Lo, 3T or 3A, 3F-3lo, 3Sa?

I'd love for her to go for 3F-3T, but I think she's more comfortable with the loop as the second jump in the combination.

This came up on the FB page as well. My thoughts, as I posted on there:

I'm in favor of putting the 3F-3L in the short not just because of a tougher layout but also because of consistency. The more she does it, the better she will get, and putting the 3Lz and the 3F-3L, which are at this point her most problematic jumps, in her short program layout will mean that she will be practicing it more. And I think that that is vital before the Olympics - she needs to do those tough jumps a lot more so that she can get it consistent before Sochi.

A lot of this has to do with the Tim Goebel/The Skating Lesson interview. Jenny asked Tim why he always skated his worlds layout even at the beginning of the season, and Tim said that it was because he wanted to push for consistency from the very beginning instead of playing it safe. Jenny also mentioned the case with Agnes/Carolina - they were doing different combos in their FS and SP, and Jenny saw that it really hurt Agnes a lot last season, having to practice different combos for the SP and FS, and that it may hurt Carolina in this next one with regard to consistency.

Somewhere i read stuff like "Miki Ando is with Javier Fernandez", no idea if its a rumour or not, but if so, Mao wouldnt pair up with him i guess, would be an awkward situation Laughing

Javier is currently dating Kazakhstan ice dancer Cortney Mansour according to wikipedia Very Happy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Javier_Fern%C3%A1ndez_(figure_skater)
There was a rumor that Miki and Javier are dating when Javier was still training in Morozov's group but I am not sure it was ever confirmed.

There were conflicting reports, some were saying that Miki was dating Morozov and some said that they saw Miki and Javi being very "cozy" with each other. Wasn't Javi also dating Cathy Reed at one point? When it comes to skaters and dating it's like a freaking telenovela (soap opera). Whirly

lol! I agree, when it comes to team Japan and their love life you feel like you're dealing with secret service. Hell, no! While I agree with protecting their privacy and their personal lives being non of our business, I must admit I'm very, very curious who's dating who. Yep! Especially when it comes to Mao and Taka Who, me? My shipping heart refuses to quit on these two. Too sweet!

I think most of the skaters keep their life outside skating private, but the fans still learn a lot through rumours.

Mao says she will retire after Sochi from competitive figure skating.
In the post-competition interview, she said she wanted to deliver great performance at the olympics as the culmination of her career. She said she want to skate the best performances in her skating life (at Shochi).

Reporters asked if it means that she'd retired after the olympics. She replied she's intended to do so as of now.

I'm so sad to hear this news because I never thought she'd retire so soon. She's a figure skater who loved competitions. I though she would continue even after Sochi. But thinking about what she's been through in recent years, it's not too difficult to sense how hard it is for her to remain strong both mentally and physically. It's heartbreaking ...

I really hope that next season will be a wonderful and fulfilling year for her so that she will feel satisfied with what she achieved during those years and end her competitive career on a high note.

ETA: and hopefully she will change mind after having a season off or two and return to the games ...

Although I expected this, I will be sad if Mao retires. However, I actually think this is a very wise decision on her part. I recently watched the skating lesson podcast interviews and learned that skaters are very good at knowing what their body can and cannot do. I'm sure Mao knows what she is physically capable of at this point and how much more she can push her body to complete those difficult elements. My biggest wish now is for her to achieve her dream of skating her best in Sochi so she can end on a high note. And not have lingering regrets like last time. It is always good to end your career on a high note than fade away slowly (e.g. Fumie Suguri No ).

why did she suddenly mention to retire, because right after worlds she said she was looking forward to next worlds, this just doesn't make sense. I really can't help but feel that the outcome of WTT is what lead her to think of retirement

Like linglang, I was hoping Mao'd continue to evolve even after Sochi. So I'm a little surprised that she'd make the statement re. thoughts on retirement so soon... Snow But on a second thought...she has been spending much more time than any other current female figure skaters to try to master a skill that no other could do succesfully in "current" competitions, and for such a long time. If she'd come to the point of considering that there should be a time for her to call it an end for her competition life...I'd respect that and support the decision, as a fan. Love

So sad to hear about this. I know she's been through so much pain and she's aware of what's best for her physically and mentally, but I had high hope that she'd continue her epic career until 2018.
I know it's pointless to discuss this, but had Mao competed at Turin 2006, would she had a chance at the podium? I just can't help feel that in order to deliver the best at the Olympics, an athlete has to be born at the right time. Had she been born a few months earlier, who knows what could've happened?

Depressed Crying Depressed Crying Depressed Crying

I had trouble commenting on the WTT thread, because I sold my old computer and now I'm waiting for my paycheck to buy a new one... But I just had to borrow my mum's laptop to comment on this article! Definitely the saddest information I got this week...

ballerinamao wrote:

That's what surprised me the most, because in most of the recent interviews Mao seemed to look forward to the future. For example, in the very recent interview about what the skaters plan to do in 10 years, Mao replied "I'll be 32 by then... I probably will not skate competetively any more", but the way she thought about the question and phrased the reply made me think she still hadn't made the decision to retire yet at that time. It made me hopeful that she plans to skate at least a few seasons after Sochi...

I wonder if the hip/back injury influenced Mao's decision... I remember that when Miki's injury got worse in 2008 (the year she had to withdraw from the LP at Worlds because of the pain) she became really depressed. Back then Miki said she wanted to retire, because her training sessions (especially practicing spins) became very painful.

The potential injury worried me since Japan Open (as I probably mentioned many times). Mao used to have a great donut spin, good back bend on layback, she did a lot of spins in her Gala programs and liked to do Biellmans. But this season she had only 1 spin in her Gala program (no Biellman), stopped doing donut spins and her new camel->reverse Biellman variation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Vsf31viaYlo#t=199s) and one-handed biellmans, and in general her spins became slower. I wasn't surprised wen it was announced after GPF that Mao struggled with the inury, but I hoped that things got better by Nationals & 4CC...

This just proves what a challenge being an athlete is! Worship

I pray that Mao has more than enough time to rest in the off-season and has an amazing Olympic season. And I quietly hope that, after resting and recovering, she will return to competition, if only just for fun and without 3A or the more bendy spins.
Miki still managed to have an amazing 2010-2011 season, even without Biellman or her trademark combo; Caro & Akiko had her best skates in their late twenties. I would love for Mao to go in their steps - it would be sad to see her retire now, when her jumps are finally becoming better and her expression improved so much! Depressed Crying
...That, however, is my hope as a figure skating fan. As a Mao fan, I just hope she does whatever makes her happy. Good luck!

I was shocked at first, but when she was asked if she will be retiring after Sochi, what Mao actually said was 'That's how I'm feeling NOW (or...That's what I'm planning NOW)'. Some articles are titled like 'Asada announced retirement', but there are other articles which are titled 'Asada suggestively talked retirement' only.

It seems that Sato had never heard her say she had been considering retirement until today either, so I do not think she has announced her final decision yet. When she does make her final decision to retire, I assume she will hold a proper press conference and announce it there. She's too big and popular to formally announce her retirement in an interview right after a competition.

Although I will support any decision she makes, I think it's a mistake to consider her words today as her official retirement announcement. She has merely told the press how she is feeling NOW. No more, no less.

Keep in mind that when asked about Sochi in the interview, she first said 'I want to perform well in the highest stage such as the Olympics as a final compilation. I want to deliver the best performance of my skating career there', and those words led the press to ask her if she plans to retire after Sochi and then she replied 'That's how I'm feeling NOW (or...That's what I'm planning NOW)'. Had the press not asked her if she's thinking of retiring, she may have said nothing about it. Her words 'final compilation' does give the impression that she will be retiring, but lots of skaters who do not plan on retiring afterwards say the same kind of thing when asked about Olys.

Mao is surely thinking about retiring after next season, but I think it's pretty obvious that she hasn't made up her mind totally about it yet.

Because of my job I don't have too much time to post on the forum, but I watch all competitions and try to follow all your posts guys. Mao's retirement after the olympics is a sad news, but not a surprise. She's skated for whole her life, I think she needs some rest, but when it happens, I will feel like some part of figure skating would end.

Let's remember there are skaters who retired and came back after that. Mao also has a competitive spirit, I believe olympics won't be her last competition. Smile

With this news I'm even more excitied about olympic game. I hope Mao will be focused on preparing and won't compete at too many events right before Sochi.

Good luck Mao!!! Cheering Cheering Cheering

Thanks for the info, Pochi! flower

Phew, I just hope Mao can have a bit of time to herself now. This season was super-hectic. Unconscious

BTW, the translated "10 years from now" interviews can be found here: http://ohheyjamiee.tumblr.com/post/47286735139/ten-years-from-now-thatll-be-when-all-the
(Quotes from Akiko, Kanako & Miki are also included).
Quote :
“Ten years from now! That’ll be when all the little kiddies like Shoma turn senior.”
Actually, Shoma is already 15. He’ll probably move up to seniors soon.
“Oh, I see. How old will I be? 32… I see. I probably won’t be competing anymore then. There are a lot of things I want to do beside skating. Normal things like wanting to get married and having kids. I want to try to open a restaurant specializing in simple comfort foods or a cafe. Like a traditional cafe! I have a lot of dreams. Of course, skating-wise, I also thought about wanting to teach little kids.” —Mao Asada

Why I'm not surprised that Mao wants to open a restaurant? Laugh And it would be great to see Mao coaching young skaters in the future. flower
