Congratulations to the medalists!
I just love the lovely moments when Mao came out of the back stage to congratulate Akiko at the very beginning, and how she helped to adjust Kanako's medal on the podium.

And I just found this hilarious clip, after the game, these 3 at the back stage:

It was SO funny they're congratulating each other for their missed jumps... lol!

I had no idea that Mao currently sets the record for the second and third highest personal best score ever!

So, do you guys think this FS layout will be Mao's plan for the Olympics? I think it is very strong already and if she'll start talking about adding another Triple Axel or another 3/3, coach Sato will stop her Smile

What I love about this layout is that if Mao lands everything, she will win. It was not the case last Olympics, when everything wasn't in Mao's hands, even if she was clean she would still lose to a clean Kim. But not this time, not with these jumps planned. If she lands all of them, nobody will be able to beat her and this thought I think will give Mao confidence and fire.
And second reason this is such a good layout is that even if makes a mistake on 3A, she still will have a lot of content left. more than most.
I somehow feel a lot more optimistic now Smile

I want Mao to stick to this layout (jump content, I mean) and make the techniques solid. It's no longer about making how many 3As. If she nails them all clean it'll be another record and one that will most likely be very difficult to surpass. Score-wise, because of rule changes they can be surpassed. But if Mao lands everything she's planned she'd be the first to land an 8-triple program complete with all kinds of triples. And if she goes for 3A, 3F+3T, 3Lo in the short that's gonna be the first 4 triple SP ever. That's actually what I wanna see.

First, lets get her confident and consistent with the current upgraded layout first... The SP is the start, hopefully the FS will follow soon.

She stated she wanted to do two 3As in the free for the future here:
http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20130210-00000205-sph-spo

But I agree with you guys, I think Mao should focus on really executing the jump layout she has now well, rather than think about adding another difficult element into a program Yep!

On another note, I just watched a lot of the other skaters on Youtube and I really love the understated elegance + costume of Christina's sp. I think if she opens up her shoulders more and arches her back throughout the program & esp. during her spiral before her loop, her PCS would be a little higher because she tends to have a really straight back during her choreography.

I loved Meryl & Charlie's FD! And Scott came off as a big jerk to me again (piss-off comment all over) the way he gestured and told Mike to "get this guy outta here" to the camera guy. Idk, I get that you're upset but couldn't you have just asked the guy to leave silent

Hah! Saw this on the feed yesterday, too. To me he looked pissed they had to stop. And even more pissed when the camera guy tried to get closer. What did he expect? No one knew why they suddenly stopped short. There didn't seem to be any noticeable injury so its expected the camera guys will try to capture whatever is happening to find out more.

Maybe I made it seem bigger than for what it really was because it was in the middle of their routine but Scott just seems unpleasant to me with the scowl, the flicking of the wrist, the shaking of his head at the end when he saw his scores, etc; and didn't his mama teach him to respect people who are older than you! A "Mike, can you..." wouldn't have hurt Evil or Very Mad

I know, right? The camera guy was just doing his job. The same thing would have happened anywhere and he acts like the cameraman was going way over the boundary. I get he doesn't want the camera guy all up in their space when they have to discuss things with Marina, but a simple "no" or a hand in front of the lens wouldn't have worked? He's so dismissive in his body language and acts like everyone is beneath him (& the way he acted at WTT) Rolling Eyes

And this is the reason I don't like them as a pair. I know people are saying they are the sweetest people off the ice, but with Scott behaving the way he's been since Olympics, I honestly doubt that HE's the sweetest guy. I seriously can't stand him, have some respect dude! Evil or Very Mad

Sorry Pochi, I misunderstood your post. Embarassed

I'm glad Zijun performed in the gala, she's becoming one of my favourite future stars. Yep!

And I know I've said this hundreds of times already, but I love how close Team Japan is with each other, sometimes I wonder if they know that they're actually rivals on the ice. Hell, no! It's like watching 3 sisters having fun. Wub

It seems like the media is very quick to hype any up-and-coming athletes. I haven't seen anything really special about Grace that would make her a future international threat, but she seems to be humble and considers Mao as a role model, so I hope she'd make progress.

By the media, you mean American media and Phil Hersh. He always does this. He hero-worships and promotes all of USFSA's poster children. However, he pays no attention to Christina (as you can see in that article), Ross Miner, Mirai Nagasu, and Caroline Zhang. He hasn't paid any attention to Castelli/Shnapir despite being all over Coughlin/Denney last season. It drives me nuts.

Also, Aunt Joyce's guy with Jenny Kirk has posted some thoughts on 4CC Pairs and Dance. I happen to agree with most of everything they said about Virtue/Moir, Davis/White, the Shibs, and Chock/Bates. What do you all think? (Warning - it does take about half an hour). I thought it particularly interesting their comments on Igor's teams versus Marina's teams.

Very, very late though .....
Congratulations Mao-chan flower Encore Many Hearts Confetti Rockstar
You are such a great, wonderful, exquisite superwoman athlete!

I couldn't help my tears when I read that she landed 3A in SP on this form via cell phone. I was at an airport on my way to my parent's place. I was so worried next day but she made it again! It's too bad that she had ur calls but it's better to have stricter calls here than later.

Thanks everyone for pbp, clips and phtos!!

Some Japanese TV shows covered 4CC news and video were posted on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-S56nVnSeQ
Mao: I was able to perform short program in the exact way I wanted to deliver.

After SP
Mao: I knew I must do it and I went for it. At the take-off, I knew 99% I would nail it, and I think that feeling was a success factor.

@3:28 (The reaction of the Satos are priceless. Razz )
Kumiko-sensei: You finally made it!
Mao: I did it! Oh good. (with a sigh of relief). Beautiful! (as watching the replay) Thank goodness. I finally made it! Yes!

Mao: The quality (of her 3A) has become better than before. I believe itís improved from the time of (Vancouver) Olympics. I think I should feel confident of doing 3A.

@6:54
Mao: At the beginning of the season, I skated at competitions by focusing on doing what I could do to the full potential. In the second half of the season, I switched to skate to aggressive programs with more difficult jumps that I used to have in my programs in the past. Having difficult jumps in the programs helped me to become more aggressive. I feel Iím getting back to my old form, a strong person at heart and in skating.

Mao: In both SP and FP some issues were identified after 4CC and some rooms for further improvement were found too. So I want to work hard to become even better and better. First, I want to attempt what I want to do as my ultimate goal at worlds and see how much I can do, and at the same time I want to enjoy checking how much I can do.

@9:19 Immediately before FS
Mr. Sato: Donít try to skate safe. What you will have to keep in mind is flow and rhythm, and you will be totally fine. Stay aggressive and do it with all your strength.
Mao and Kumiko: Jump axel lightly and donít strain too much.
Mr. Sato: Be confident.
Kumiko: Go for it!
Mr. Sato: Give it everything youíve got!

Found her interview after SP. Let me translate only the part on 3A.

http://pigeon-post.net/events/2013FourContinents/interviews/Mao_SP.html

Interviewer: Do you feel that 3A is getting better than the ones you did in the past?
Mao: I do not compare them in videos but I think the quality has improved and it has become better than the time of (Vancouver) Olympics. In the practices too, the quality of 3A is definitely getting better and the quality of other jumps is getting better. I think Iím now able to relax when I attempt jumps.

Interviewer: What are the factors behind the quality improvement?
Mao: Iíve been revamping jump techniques with Nobuo-sensei and itís all about patience. But weíve put a hold on 3A practices and did 2As only. When my bad habits have gone away, I resumed 3A practices. Because my bad habits had faded away and Iím good at 2A, Iím now getting use to do 3A in the same form as 2A.

Interviewer: What do you mean by bad habits?
Mao: One thing was I strained too much. Also I waited for quite a long before take-off and my body stayed leaning forward into the jump. Now all those habits are gone. Things become opposite. If I happen to strain my body now, the jump axis gets shifted. So I keep in mind that I should jump easily.

Interviewer: Was it Mr. Satoís policy to put a hold on 3A for a certain time period?
Mao: It was Nobuo-sense who stopped putting 3A in programs and practices. I was practicing it without him, but if my 3A practice in the past was 10, I would practice about 2 or so. I practiced all the other jumps with Nobuo-sensei (as routine) and only when we had some time available we did 3A practices too.

Interviewer: Where do you find difference from your past 3A?
Mao: I find the most difference is entry timing which is lighter and faster now and I donít wait (for a timing) before take-off.

Interviewer: When did 3A started to improve?
Mao: I wasnít able to land it before the start of this season. But it started getting better in terms of form and timing. So I hoped that I would make a steady progress staying on the right track after the season started. I wasnít on the ice as much as I usually do during the off-season. I think because of that I was able to get a new timing Ö a technique new to me started to develop.

Interviewer: Do you think consistency will increase too?
Mao: Yes, I do. I think I will be able to make further improvement.

********
ETA: I watched this news clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8GXjwYjgTk) in which Mao said she uses video clips to check old and new 3As. It may be possible her answer to the first question in the above might be heard opposite.

I'm quite fond of Gracie, too. So far I've had no bad impressions on her personality, and she is so charming in her EX pro (the one she did during GPS). sunny

I felt so sorry for her after reading the 4CC ladies FP thread in GS yesterday. Lot's of people were bashing her like crazy. Many said Christina should go to Worlds and not Gracie...I do prefer Christina's skating style myself, but Gracie just came up from juniors with a whole lot of pressure. I think Gracie has lots of potential but it looks to me like many people around her are pushing her too hard. She needs time to gain more experience, and definitely a better short program which matches her character (simply hate her SP!). Her free program is much better. You can see she's more comfortable skating to it than her SP. Her SP is trying to create her into some sexy mature woman, which she obviously is not. I think her team should let her skate to pros like Alissa's. I've felt over the past few years, that quite a few young skaters rush into skating sex appealing pros, and I'm not so happy with that trend. Yep, Sadly

And talking about who was bashed harshly like hell in GS was Agnes. Yes she has jumping problems and tends to melt down. She's not graceful like Christina nor is she charming like Gracie. However, when she's on, her jumps are really big and dynamic. I've seen her live so I'm quite sure about this no matter what others say. She's rough and sloppy still, but she does have something special too. It was painful and shocking to read some members from the US bashing her in GS...you'd never see a Jpnse figure fan bashing a Jpnse skater in an Eng forum like that. No

There are fan wars in Jpnse BBs too of course, but still, most true fans of the sport love our skaters as a team. At least in the Jpnse forum I administrate, all the active members there have their faves but respect all the other Jpnse skaters as well. Not just the top skaters but we all support and cheer for skaters who aren't doing so good. We never bash skaters if he or she doesn't win or make the podium. We worry for them and post messages of support. I think one of the reasons team Jpn are all good friends when they're not competing is because they know that most fans are like that. I love you

Anyway, I hope young hopes like Gracie and Kaetlyn have achieved something from what they experienced in 4CC, and will be able to do better at Worlds. It was only their first major Intl competition. They deserve to be given a break. Drama!

ETA: I don't think I'll be going near GS or FSU even just to read until at least Olys is over. Our fellow Asian country extremists are already back, and they just kept on bashing Mao about her URs and even said over and over that Mao succeeding the 8 triple layout is only a fantasy which will never happen. Some of them didn't even notice she changed her layout, but still kept insulting her. I used to think GS was a bit better forum than FSU, but I guess I was wrong. The mods are good people though. I feel sorry that they handle so many rude posters there...

That's what I was trying to say when I wrote 'if it's okay with her'. I kind of had the impression she looked tired during the competition than usual, so I was a bit worried about her health, that's all. Smile

Sorry Pochi, I misunderstood your post. Embarassed

I'm glad Zijun performed in the gala, she's becoming one of my favourite future stars. Yep!

No need to apologize zarina, I should have expressed what I meant more clearly. Btw, someone said in GS that Zijun had a minor injury or something...it may be just a rumor, but I've felt she skates a bit more lively and smiles more in K&C usually than she did this time, so if that was the case, it does kind of make sense to me. Hope she'll be okay by Worlds. Smile

oh no... I hope it's just a rumor ... No

The highlights of 4CC for me besides Mao was: Zijun Li; Love Hearts Love Hearts Love Hearts lovely, lovely, lovely performances especially her FS. I love her delicate, soft and elegant movements.
Kevin Reynolds; his skating skills have improved a lot. affraid It seems he is going to be a strong contender (or dark horse) for Sochi. His smiles @5:17 when he saw the standing ovation was priceless and his coach @7:38 stamping for excitement. It's such a great moment to see. Razz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeTP1QwiYQw) I hope he will keep improving skating skills further.

lol! Yep, Mao showed them that she's on and back for sure!

Just to be fair...there were quite a few people who praised Mao's performances highly in GS, too. But they can be divided into 2 groups I think. 1.Those who praised her for her challenge spirit, still predicting Mao will never be able to nail all the jumps in her layouts clean. / 2.Those who praised her for her challenge spirit, and have high hopes that she'll master that monstorous layout in the future perfectly. Group 1 obviously seems to have other faves, so I wouldn't blame them for wanting to think that way. They're frightened for sure and that's totally natural, cause there is no other lady who has the guts to attempt something like Mao did this time, even by the time we'll have Olys.

I looked back on what most of the basher's posts, and I kind of understood why it HAS to be Mao whom they hate the most. Mao may not be as consistent as some other top ladies, but she's got guts and strong will more than any other girl, and those haters can't help admitting it. Their faves will probably never attempt anything as risky as Mao does and they know it. They keep on saying their faves can do what Mao is challenging all the same, but they know deep down that thier faves will never go for it anyway. I think that's what irritates them more than anything. I'm seriously starting to feel sorry for them...they'll never be able to experience the excitement of following Mao in her insane fearless challenges.

In that sense too, I think we had the proper winners this time for both ladies and mens. It was heartbreaking to see Dai sink down, but the way he skated in the gala made me feel he won't give up anything, so I'm not worried that much. I think it was totally fair and well deserved for Kevin to win instead of Yuzu. Even with his quads Kevin isn't perfect yet, but he did challenge himself to overcome his weak points dramatically this season. Skating to a Miyamoto pro must have been a tough challenge for him but he went for it. I was really happy for him, just like the audience in Osaka. His performance moved them, and it didn't matter to them that a non-Jpnse skater won. I really loved how the audience was in this competition. I love you
