I wonder if there will be practice at main rink before FS. I do hope she will have a chance to get used to with the main rink. Does anyone know?

I doubt it, it's booked entirely for the rest of the competition.

Actually, according to:
http://www.isuresults.com/events/WC2013_ColouredTimeSchedule.pdf

Yes, there's another practice in MR before Lady's FS.

Sweet, in that case I can watch it Smile

Thank you COHK and helen!
It's sooo good that there is one day between SP and FS.
I hope Mao will relax and take it easy while regaining her Twisted Evil spirit. I know it's so contradicting. Laugh

I feel bad for Yuzuru.
He clearly was not ready to compete, but he has to compete for Japan's spots.
It seems that he is consistently plagued by these injuries and sicknesses.
I hope he recovers quickly before next season.

I feel sorry for Yuzuru but I was comforted by Nicky Slater's comment: "He has the ability to be the greatest skater in the history, but he hasn't been able to handle his talent". He's a hardworking kid and I hope the best for him.

Ok, I woke up this morning, saw the result, I haven't watched Mao's skating yet but let me rant.

huh.....A deja vu....

I wonder sometime what Mao is thinking ? does she know she has to do something about nerves ? this is all about nerves. She looked so relaxed when she arrived and even confirmed that she was in top form. Mao needs help to get rid of nerves and reading books is not enough. I bet even Sato can't convince her in certain things.
Secondly, she has to decide what she wants: either skating her dream layout but risk her gold at Sochi and many podiums, or, skate an easier layout and win medals.

I'm quite sad and angry because in my eyes, Yuna did not do as well as we thought and the judges were ready to give Mao a high score but she basically threw her chance away.

(pls understand that I am ranting because, just like all of you, I love Mao and want her to do well)

I've been wanting to write a letter to her team about that (though she probably won't listen). There's no skater I want to win gold more than Mao. To be honest, I don't agree with the thought that "She'd been working hard all her life for the gold, she's been doing insanely difficult layout, so she deserves it". You don't automatically deserve anything, you have to earn it. I'd rather see Mao winning gold with a gorgeous clean program than making history for her difficult layout which is marred by UR and e. . Just like in gymnastics, I prefer seeing a flawlessly executed routine and a routine packed with tricks after tricks. It's less than one year until Sochi and I feel very pessimistic. I don't know if there'll be enough time to stabilize her jumps.

I especially want Mao to win when her competitors all bring out their A games. She can't rely on them making mistakes. The gold is within her reach.

I just woke up and I can't convey to you all how depressed I feel...Sad
Every year its the same ritual!
I get my hopes high even if I know that I'll be thrashed after Mao skates.
Even how much I try to comfort myself, I feel like shit...

And I know you guys feel depressed as well, so *hugs to all of you* Sad
Why is the LP so far? 0_0

Nice description in quote pearlyriver. I think it could apply to Mao too. Both talents are still free & wild. But yes, poor Yuzu. He tried so hard to remain upbeat in kiss n cry but he was keeping everything inside until he get backstage. I wonder if Japan have like for American athletes that if you are injured or unable to compete you have tell to federation because I remember a lot of American people on forums were mad Rachael competed with injury instead of reporting condition and withdraw. think she get some kind of fine afterwards too. I hope Japan fans are not mad he was ill. I am going to pray for men's japan team to get three spots because three spots is already too few Sad

Mao, my dear Mao. WOW! My heart sink into stomach when I see popped jump. Not good for health Sweatdrop I know you try your best every time you get on ice and and all I can do is watch on computer and cheer for you. I wish I was your friend sometime, no a lot of times so I can give you a big big hug (and big big hug to Maochan756 & everybody...group hug) because I know you are disappointed right now. After disappointment, cry, get mad maybe punch something. Then accept position. Think positive. Tomorrow is a new day and day after that. Don't worry about results, don't over practice. When competition day comes again, you try your best, if you do good you get medal (i'm optimist too so I think any three is still possible Razz) & if you don't then you don't. I know even if it doesn't go as planned still then you could be heartbroken and different emotions but you are strong girl you will come back. that is why you have so many admirers, frustrated fans, expectations and critics and Mao-haters because people know what you are capable of when you are at your best Smile

Beside the 2ft it was gorgeous though...

yes, that two foot landing really cost her and since it was a slight two foot landing there's no way she should get a positive GOE. too bad as well for the triple flip and especially that loop.

i get the idea this has absolutely nothing to do with poor conditioning and everything to do with headcasing. what are the satos doing to help mao be mentally strong? not that mao hasn't improved in that area this season... it's just that if she continues to head case this way i don't know what to think anymore.

Headcase is the word I'm most scared of in sports. It's hard to be Sasha Cohen or Anna Pavlova's fan. I feel like Mao really needs to get a psychologist. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Satos' students are not known for their jumps and mental toughness. But I can't ask them to be good at every aspect. Hm, Patrick Chan has a big team including a sport science director, movement and balance coach, technical specialist, fitness and nutrition coach and physiotherapist.

Yuna goes for the easier layout because she knows that she'll nail it and she will win.

I actually feel bad about the +2 GOE for Mao. Haters will have a reason to bash her and blame it on the "dirty Jap money". And they're busy with their Mao-bashing party. I had been worried when seeing the banners full of Japanese companies.

As for Carolina, she had the perfect skater's body. I love her speed, the amazing footwork and those bloody spins and she was able to sell her routine well. She was truly the artist on ice.

And if Patrick Chan can afford to have such a big team then Mao can. She's a multi-million dollar earning athlete and one of the highest earning female athletes in the world.

Some people have a thought that ice was different at last two groups. Too cold. And that's why entrance for spins and edge jumps, like axel, loop and sal were in group of risk. It's just speculating, but I saw a lot of this at Russian forum(from one specialist also). Don't know if it can be true or not. We were kidding that our Sochi ice in anti Canadian, and here it is their revenge. Evil or Very Mad

Thanks for the info. I had thought that it was nerves, but when Liza made that uncharacteristic fall, I began to question the ice surface. She landed that combo perfectly, but that fall was so unusual that even the British commentators didn't get it. I'm disillusioned by Skate Canada.

Carolina's score is the most unjustifiable of the day, but she deserves props for being honest:
"Yes, I was surprised about my marks, but I felt very honored that the judges appreciated the effort I put into my choreography and into my program.
I actually thought: `The more you do it, the more you get used to it.' But unfortunately it always feels the same: you come here
and you start from zero. I might have done this ten times before, and my 11th world championship is not easier than any other before. On the other hand I have learned so much about figure skating in ten years and I have a big conviction that in figure skating it’s not just about jumping but that it is a form of art."

What a character. If I wan't a Caro fan before, I definitely am now.

Yes, so I won't be so sad and talking about Mao nerves, it was just a mistake like Liza's. FS is another story and I'm sure Mao knows it and do her best. This another story and please, let's not try to find it in the past, it's future and it will be another performance ,another day and I'm sure another place.

Lynn Rutherford from Ice Network said that "There is no proscribed deduction for two foot, I don't believe, and I am guessing judges liked take off and air position". Is that right?

Lol, this was my first thought as well, Kaetlyn is skating in last group,so the ice is going to be the way it's supposed to be. Laughing

but seriously, IF this was the case and ice was really different in the last two groups, is this allowed? If this is true however, then it's a mistake that should never have happened at such a prestigous competition.

I hope Mao won't overtrain today, two practises in the same day are not good, so hopefully she'll skip one of them and just take some rest and enjoy herself.
It's a shame that she couldn't do any 3A in the warm up, hopefully skaters won't be in each others way on Saturday.

My heart is breaking for Yuzu, but it's so lovely to see David comforting him.He really is a great guy, and everyone seem to love being around him. Now if only he'd start being more creative in his work...

And for the love of God, please don't lose three spots in men. pale Worship

Meryl/Charlie had a sensational short dance. Everything was in order: synchronization, twizzle, attack, expression. They really outskated Virtue/Moir.

Oh, if Merly and Charlie win this, it would mean they had a perfect season, winning EVERY competition they entered. WOW! Boogie
I wonder what this will do to their "friendship" with Tessa/Scott... Who, me?

Jus no freak falls or mistakes please. I really don't want to see Scott on top of the podium. I can't stand that guy.

Not the best explanation (then again, it's difficult to explain something properly within the Twitter's tiny word limit), but she's right. Smile

There 2 types of GoE deduction:
Arrow mandatory negative GoE, marked as "GOE -" in the technical handbook. The judges must give negative GoE for those mistakes.
Arrow reducted GoE, marked just as "- number" in the technical handbook. The judges reduct the number from the GoE that the element would get otherwise, i.e. if the jump had good entrance, distance & air position, but unclear take-off edge (for Lz/F) or slightly wonky landing, it still can get 0 or low positive GoE.

Then there are two types of "two-footing":
Arrow actually landing using two feet --> GoE reducted by -3
Arrow touching down with the free foot without weight transfer - --> GoE reducted by -1 (as long as there's no other mistakes caused by the touch-down, like turn-out or step-out).

Mao just scratched the ice with her free leg withough putting any weight on it, and she didn't turn-out or step-out, so if the judges felt the jump was good otherwise, they could still give her decent GoE.

Actually, thank you for this question. I just noticed there were some changes to the judging system that I overlooked - mainly that the fall is now "-3" not "GOE -3", and severe wrong edge take-off is "-2 to -3" not "GOE -2".
Not bad, it gives the judges more freedom, I think. I noticed this season, specially among the juniors, that the judges actually used their brain while judging the take-offs, and less severe edge changes on otherwise good jumps got better GoE than the jumps with totally wonky technique or disrupting errors like turn-outs and hand-downs.
