PostSubject: Re: Mao News: Off-Season 2013   Tue Sep 24, 2013 3:59 am

I just came across a local newspaper article (from Nagoya) posted on twitter.

***

According to it, Kumiko-sensei said "(Her) 3A is much better than that of this time last year.  We do not think we want to advise that she should eliminate 3A (from her programs)."

Then, the article talks about her short and free programs, her rework on jump techniques and loss of her mother. Mao definitely wants to include 3A and 3-3.

Sato-sensei said "She's been practicing as hard and calm as usual.  Nothing special even for Olympic season for her."

Mao said "I finish a day's practice only after I'm completely satisfied. It's always been so."

****

As usual the media's focus is on 3A. The article contains nothing new, but mainly reused information that's been reported in the past, except Kumiko-sensei's remark on her 3A.  And it's supported by Yuka's account during her interview on TSL.

To be honest, I'm not found of her attempt to include 3A in short program and I also wish she would be able to reduce the base value to take less riskier path and reduce mental and physical burden.  But I know that's not going to happen with her because she's Mao Asada. Smile

I'm happy to know that she's in good shape and her 3A is good already before the start of new season, because as we all know, she's often mentally affected by 3A conditions. I'm sure good 3As  boost her confidence. Good luck!

Some rough translation about the news from the link above:
- the purpose of making the CM is for those who had expressed their support for Mao via the website http://mao-asada-ouen.jp/ and the "MAO ASADA応援プロジェクト" (Mao support project)
- the background music is "何度でも" (Time after time), by a JPop band "Dreams come true". Just like the title of the song, Mao has been working hard and keep on trying time after time. This is also the song that Mao would listen to often during practices or before competitions.
- the content of the CM is a simulating of Mao's everyday practices. To shoot the CM, they rent a rink nearby that's quite similar to the usual practice rink. During the shooting, Mai and Sato coach came to the rink setting as well. So it's pretty much looking like everyday practices.

The CM will be formally released tomorrow on Mao's birthday.

Interview #1

Mao says she gets power from support and cheer that her fans give.  She receives a lot of letters from people and among them she's most impressed by messages which say they are happy just by watching her performances regardless of results and also they will keep rooting for her on both good days and bad days. She hears cheers and applause before, during and after performance, and that gives her power.

"Whenever I loose my heart, I get power ..... from people who support me.  I'm able to keep going on because of them.  I'm determined to show you the best performances.  I want to show you the strongest Mao Asada ever."

Sumitomo plans to post more videos in series. cheers

FYI, a few months ago I became good friends with a teacher from Japan who is staying here in San Francisco for 1 year. Yesterday I asked him where did he teach. He said he taught at Chukyo University!!! I asked if he knew Mao Asada and he said yes and she was his student. I found out that he also taught Takahiko Kozuka, Miki Ando and Mai Asada. I freaked out and I was so excited. I asked him to get me a autograph when he goes back to japan.

Wow! WOW!   He is very lucky and you are so lucky too!! Maybe you can visit him next year when he's back at Chukyo and seek a chance to see Mao on campus. Too sweet!

wice2016 is so quick to put music and the clip together.
Note: the poster created it based on his/her anticipation and the clip was shot in July so there may be some changes made in choreography since then.

This reminds me of her Bell's of Moscow, but much more powerful, and I'm so thrilled. Panic!

I love this step sequence!Dance  I want to see level 4 and +3 goe across the board.

I think that wice2016 is spot on with the music. I remember when Sasha skated to Rach, she used this part of music for her step sequence. Since TAT did the choreography for both of this programs, I don't see her changing that part, but I hope that she included the gorgeous and powerful slow music from the second movement as well.

I can't wait for JO!Happy dance  I know it's next week, but honestly, this is going to be the longest week ever.Faint2

I hope she'll do a perfect spiral to the lyrical mellow music from the second movement and I'll be moved to tears. That part always gives me chill.

I second this. Or, since she's already doing a spiral in choreo sequence at the end of the program, I hope for her gorgeous spread eagle. It would fit perfectly with this music, and if she does a 2A-3T out of spread eagle, I'll just die.Swoon  Or is this too difficult.scratch  Either way, I really hope that TAT included this part of the music as well.

Mao seems to use 1st movement only. When she announced her programs, it's described as Op.18-1, and that information is on her official website. Plus, her new CD includes only 1st movement. I guess it's similar edit to Denis Ten's version.

Oh ok. I was hoping she'd use all 3 movements but I knew it wasn't going to work what with only 4 minutes. Still though.. hoping for some awesome choreography from Tatiana. Swan Lake was a masterpiece so I hope Rach 2 will be as epic Cheering

Oops, I feel a bit disappointed, but I hope it'll be an epic. I listened to the version played by Rachmanov himself and the first movement was more sublime and gentle than other intepretations and it were very rich in sounds.

Oh come on, TAT. I'm so dissapointed right now, 2nd movement has such a gorgeous melody, this piece was made for Mao. I just hope, her LP (music cut) won't be similar to Sasha's.Who, me?

From the short clips that I've seen, this program has potential of being epic, but I'd love it if Mao would take a different approach and used mostly the 2nd and 3rd movement, instead of the 1st, like pretty much everyone, who has ever skated to Rachmaninov.

Mao's is looking good! I can't help but smile a lot when she was talking about shopping esp on food (or so I think that's what they're talking about). Just look at the look of surprise and happiness on her face when they came in with the cake!

She's looking great and aiming for 8 triples, I think. I hope she can do her programs perfect (or almost perfect at the start of the season) because I feel it will be the basis of how you will be scored later on. Well, that's the feeling I get after V/T's massive scores at Nebelhorn. It gave me the same vibe I got during Yuna's Oly year when she came well prepared at her first GP at TEB and earned huge scores there. That set the trend for her high scores throughout the season and anything lower than that seemed not good for her. I want Mao to be scored really well because it's not just Yuna she has to overtake. There's also Caro and judges also love to shower her with more PCS when she skates clean.

Quick translation

***
The interview was done before her birthday and they gave Mao birthday cake.
She checks the cake and said “Yes, it’s 23.”

Interviewer: What do you feel about turning 23.
Mao: Well, it still in the first half of your 20s, so nothing would be different, I suppose.
I: I didn’t feel it’s going to make any difference when I turned 23.
Mao: When I turn, say, 25 I think I will feel oh I’m reaching my 30s.
I: Exactly. It’s exactly like that. (The interviewer is 25 years old now)

When she appeared the show on April 10, 2010 (after Vancouver Olympics), she expressed her thought for Sochi Olympics.
Mao: In four years, there will be another big Olympic games to be held in Sochi.  I wan to increase what I can do year by year and absorb anything that will help improve my skating (ability).

I’s been three years since then.  Mao Asada says Sochi Olympics will be the last Olympic games for her to compete.  In order to understand what changes have happened with her, we asked her to put the four things (jump, thought for figure skating, how she spends her holidays, her favourite food.) in “changed (red)” and “not changed (blue)” boxes.

I: Miss Asada, you were very fast to decide.
Mao: It’s first time for me to do something like this.
The first one is “how she spends her holidays” and she says it’s changed.
I: I understand how you spend you holidays has changed.
Mao: On holidays, usually I get up in the morning, go to massages, eat lunch and do some shopping, dropping by supermarket or bookstore, and then go back home.
I: Well, it’s very ordinal way of spending holidays.  Do you go shopping for clothes?
Mao: I don’t check clothes recently.  I mean by shopping, I often go to supermarket, because I eat banana and yogurt every morning.  I buy bread and I like going to bakeries.
I: Do you like bread?
Mao: Yes, I eat bread for my breakfast.
I: So, you eat bread, yogurt and banana (for your breakfast) ..
Mao: And Kinako (sweat soybean power). I use kinako as a topping for banana.
I: You eat kinako and banana together?
Mao: Yes, and also with yogurt.
I: Is that the way for you to start the engine in the morning?
Mao: It’s said banana is a source of power ... and it’s so easy LOL. Breakfast with rice is troublesome to prepare in the morning, isn’t it?

Next one is about “her favourite food” and it hasn’t changed. Her favourite food is Sushi.

I: So your favourite food hasn’t changed and you like bread, banana ...
Mao: I like anything ... but one thing that has changed with food is now I’m able to eat wasabi.
I: You’ve grown up! (superimpose says “looking down attitude?”)  So, around times back in Vancouver Olympics, you ate Sushi without Wasabi didn’t you? But now you eat it with Wasabi.
Mao: Yes.
I: Aren’t you happy that you can eat Wasabi now?
Mao: Yes, I thought I became a grownup.

Mao Asada’s grown up and now she even goes to Sushi bar by herself. She started figure skating at five.  She soon envisioned her dream: “I want to skate at Olympic games.”  She won her first gold medal at Japanese nationals when she was 16. And in 2010 Vancouver Olympics, she was on her dream stage and succeeded landing 3 3As in one competition, making a Guinness record.  However, she made two mistakes and ended up with silver medal. “There was a bit of regret in my performance. But it’s good that I was able to get a medal.”  It’s been three years since we saw her tears and Mao Asada is determined to go to Sochi Olympics with special thought. “Sochi Olympics is a very big stage, and I want to skate my last and best performances there.”
She’s determined to skate at Sochi for her last performances (as a competitive skater).  She says her jumps have changed.  Secret formula for wining gold medal is related to triple jumps.

I: How many triple jumps do you have in your program in total?
Mao: Eight.
I: Eight.  I assume you will be able to make a Guinness record.
Mao: Oh, that’s true.  It’s good. I will do my best and hope I will be able to nail all of them.

Secret formula for wining gold medal is to land eight triple jumps in free program. Eight-triple program is quite high in the level of difficulty for female figure skaters. If she succuessfully nails all the planned triple jumps, she will become the first senior female skater who achieved it.

I: What are issues you have to overcome regarding jumps as of now?
Mao: Since Vancouver Olympics until now, I’ve been reworking on jumps and finally I started to feel the achievement. I think I’ve almost come through regarding reworking part.  I just need to bear in mind cautions (not to resume previous habits) and just keep practicing every day.
I: What is the most important secret for you to nail eight triple jumps at competition?
Mao: The first jump, I think.
I: Triple axel?
Mao: Yes.

The key to succeed eight-triple program and win OGM is the first jump, 3A.
Next thing is about her thought for figure skating and she says it’s changed.

I: So, you think your thought for figure skating has change?
Mao: I’m planning to end my competitive career in Sochi Olympic season and therefore I feel it’s changed. I competed at Vancouver with the goal of winning OGM.  But, when it was over, I was very much frustrated with my two mistakes rather than the color of medal.  I wanted to win OGM back then, but my performance ... at the end of the day, it’s my performance.  And I was frustrated with it.   So, at Sochi Olympics, I want to deliver performances that I will feel satisfied and I will not regret ... well I have no regret about games at Vancouver though. I want to finish games at Sochi feeling a sense of accomplishment.

Thank you so much for the translations linglang. I think Mao's has a very good attitude heading into Sochi. I hope she does well and succeed in doing a perfect performance.

As far as her jumps, if she wants to succeed in fully rotating her jumps, she has to gain more speed before going into her jumps rather then slowing down. I know her doing three crossovers is the text book way of going into a jump, but if Yuna is/has been doing 5 before going into hers and not losing points, then surely Mao can do the same to increase her speed. She has already improved on everything else. Conquering her jumps is the last ingredient needed to end on top (of the podium and over her competitors).

But even if she had skated clean that time, she would still have scored less than Yuna, wouldn't she?
