I'm not a big fan of how Orser handled certain issues while training YuNa, but I think in that case the Korean media was more to blame and Orser hasn't actually ever said that Mao's team asked him to coach him. IIRC:

1) The Koren media reported that Orser was asked to coach Mao, and showed Orser's e-mail to Yuna as a proof. However, the adtual e-mail was something like "There are rumors that I was asked to coach that skater, I just wanted you to know that my loyalty is to you first" and didn't actually name Mao by name or state that Orser was indeed asked to coach her (just mentioned that there were rumors).

2) A day or so later Orser appeared on the Canadian TV, and cleared up that he was never approached by Mao or her team. I still have that interview recorded somewhere.

What happened between 1) and 2),  I don't know. While Korean media claimed that Orser said he was asked to coach Mao, I've never saw a clip of him actually saying that. At the time I thoght that maybe Orser was actually approached by a Japanese reporter who asked him if he would be willing to coach Mao, and Orser mistook him for a member of Mao's team - and when he realized his mistake, he cleared it up in the interview with the Canadian TV. However, in the light of the "Mao Asada is giving up on 3A" article I wonder if it wasn't another case of "lost" in translation, as some of the Korean media are apparently not at all concerned about reliably translating their sources or reporting the truth.  Disappointed

It may be possible that the Korean medial did it on purpose to fuel the rivalry.
After reading the interview of Rafael by a Russian reporter, I felt very, very sorry for Mao's mom.  It must be heartbreaking for her to hear such a rumor that her daughter was accused of trying to steel a coach from her rival, while she knew it's categorically false accusation because Mao wanted to stay in Japan for her.  She was desperate to find her daughter a coach in Japan and asked Mr. Sato for help several times despite she met rejections several times. She must be aware that coach-less did have negative impact on her daughter's skating career. I assume she must felt sorry for her daughter.

Since Yuna and Orser teamed up they didn't hesitate to drag other skaters in particular Japanese skaters in their issues. So, there is also a possibility that Team Kim used Mao an excuse to justify the abrupt breakup with Orser.  Disappointed

Thanks for the clarification, inskate. That's what I remember vaguely about the split incident. Though it may be his way of answering to the Jpn media's questions, I still think it's something to acknowledge from Orser to pay compliments on Mao's 3A.

On another topic, re. the jumping layout, Mao did say in her interview during departure that her aim is to 'complete 6 different types of triple jumps'. I don't think there's any specific news yet about the exact layout. But I do want to point out this interview by Kumiko Sensei I just came across:
http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2014/02/05/kiji/K20140205007525570.html

Kumiko Sensei said Mao did pick up 3-3(F-L) again, and Mao had been having clean run though of the program (whatever the layout is).

Perhaps this sounds more like she may be going back to the original planned layout for Rach2? (At least she's including Lz, I think...)

Thank you for the updates, COHK!

I guess Nobuo Sato has waited patiently until Mao makes a smarter choice by herself.
I'm glad that he is not the type of coach like
「鳴かぬなら、鳴かせてみせよう、ホトトギス」 -- "If you don't sing little cuckoo, I'll make you sing",
but 「鳴かぬなら、鳴くまで待とう、ホトトギス」 -- "If you don't sing little cuckoo, I'll wait till you sing".  cheers

Orser wrote(?) to Yuna  "I'm flatterd" in that regard, IIRC.  scratch

Oh, I remember this disaster. I think the first one or one of the first who put this "Orser was approached by Mao" bullshit was Yuna's former agency . I always found it suspiciously, how after team Yuna declining to renew the contract with this agency, a few days later the news about Orser and Mao appeared. I do believe that Brian was approached, but not by Mao's team, but possibly from one of the many IMG agents, just to inquire if the possibility would exist,IMO.

I still think Yuna's mom was the reason for the Yuna-Orser split.

And this is the best outcome possible. Now, she'll be at peace with herself, instead of thinking she should've gone for the second 3A, or not being satisfied with her skating. Going for "only" one 3A in both programs is the best way to go. And I hope Orser is right and that she'll win this time.

But since then whenever I see Mr. Sato I shake his hand and say good luck to Mao," said Arutunian.

How I wish she could've stayed with him. I always wondered what would've happened in Vancouver had Mao stayed with Rafa and if her mom wouldn't be sick. My guess, it would've been very close with Mao even possibly winning, considering that she would have a stable training enviroment and a jump specialist for her coach.

According to the sports magazine "number", it seems Mr. Sato had decided to let Mao do what she wanted regarding the FS layout.

"When she nails it, 3A is the best jump that she does among the jumps she can do.  It is indeed mesmerizing. Flow, height, timing, everything is controlled. For a female skater, body change between the age 19 and 23 is significant, and it teaches me anew how remarkable it is for a female over 160cm to nail it."

"I've never heard her talking about OGM.  Rather than a medal, triple axel is her dream. As a coach I have a lot of tactics in my head, but if she really wants to do it (three 3A), I want help her achieve it."

Then, Kumiko who was listening besides him said as if she made fun of him, "Oh my, you've become Mao's grandpa."

Mr. Sato said, "No I'm not.  I'm her coach. I shouldn't be influenced by emotions.  I have to keep making level-headed decisions. Even during the Olympic weeks, I may yell at her if necessary."

***

I suppose the interview was done in Dec, because one news report today said Mao told him about her policy change on Jan. 6 when they resumed training after new year break.  It may be that he learned from his experience when he failed to convince her many times that she didn't need 3A back in 2010, 2011 and 2012.  I couldn't understand why he let her do so many 3A attempts in Nice though. He might thought Mao wouldn't change her mind because he knew 3A is so special for her, in particular you know how special it is when you know about her mother. He might half given up of persuading and rather choose to help her achieve her dream.

I assume Mai also helped to change her mind.  From the interview held after the nationals, it seemed Mai wasn't really sure or agreeing with three 3A.

Anyway, it's a clever decision and I'm really happy about the fact Mao Asada is an athlete who keeps evolving.  She had issues with her techniques but she sincerely and squarely faced them and tried hard to correct them rather than running away.

If the magazine interview was done in Jan, I think Mr. Sato is a tactician.  Too sweet!

I was wondering the same thing. I assumed they'd say hi at least if they met somewhere during competition.  I bought "number" (sports magazine) because it features Mao in its recent issue and one article had a mention on how they met each other since their split.

It happened in a corridor at a competition venue.  When they met, Mao hugged him suddenly and started giving updates on how she'd been doing and lastly said "Thank you so much for everything you taught me."  This made his heart melt.  They didn't exchange word since they separated in 2008 without dissolving misunderstanding. "I cannot teach her anymore.  But since then whenever I see Mr. Sato I shake his hand and say good luck to Mao," said Arutunian.

The article didn't say at which competition it happened.  Considering the article issued by a Russian writer last year where he talked about her, it seems it happened probably before the article's interview.

The magazine also has an interview of Rafael on Mao. (Sorry I don't have time this week. I hope someone will translate it and post it on the net.  Sweatdrop )  Even if Mao retires after this season and become a show skater, I wonder if she considers about going back to him.  It may not be a full-time coaching like for competitive skaters, but for a show skater to maintain her skills for the shows.  She doesn't need to maintain her 3A for shows, but for other jumps.  I want to see how it will evolve when they work together now.

I missed this tidbit earlier, but reading it made me teary-eyed.
I'm sure Rafa appreciated too since it brings some closure to their sudden and sad split.
Mao is always so thankful of her previous teachers, I love her attitude. She's never resentful or blames anyone. What an amazing person!

welcome to the forum tinyskater, Mao and her performance was beautiful, and I really hope that she will skate lights out and land a perfect 3A (like the one we recently saw in practice) in the individual event.

Thanks for sharing this! This made me teary again, especially the part about Mao and her Mom sharing the food.

I love this part:
Kato and her husband are great fans of Asada, who Kato says is “so kind and thoughtful to others.”  Yep!

“I only hope she will be able to perform free from injuries and without regrets,” Kato said. “I look forward to welcoming her back cheerfully when she comes back.”

I think that Mao will be cheered no matter what for her kindness, strength, determination and the beauty + sportsmanship she brought to her sport over the past decade.

I just watched Mao's press conference via youtube. I love the way she handled the questions. She's very much poised the entire conference and looked very respectable. She was asked frequently about the comment made by former PM Mori and she answered them with much grace! Couldn't be more proud of her! Mao is elegance and class!
