Mao Asada - the walking conglomerate

Uhhh... this? "She has also landed quadruple Axels in practice, but she has never attempted one in competition." <<-- I have never heard of this before  scratch

I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me when I read that line. I'm gonna need to see some video evidence before I belive this one.

Nah... I don't think it's true. She tried quad sal before in practice. UR or maybe DG even. If she's managed to land a quad axel or even attempted one in practice and the Japanese media got wind of it I'd bet they'd cover it even more.

Add the Korean media too. You know they would be so worried for their kween if Mao was able to do a quad axel. Heck, even the men Figure Skaters would be worried.  Escape ROTFLMAO

They probably meant quad sal or quad loop. I guess quad loop, because certain things in the article seem "inspired" by the pre-Olympic articles from 2005-06 season - like Mao's signature move being cross-grab Biellman. It was a position she did 4-5 times in a program back then (as a part of layback spin, combo spin and the spirals), but not often since then, because overdoing it caused chronic back pain. Right now step sequences, 3A & I-spin and balletic style are more of a "signature" for Mao.

Speaking of which, here's a nice "who I'm rooting for" post on Tumblr: http://belovedinternet.tumblr.com/post/75649199754/who-im-rooting-for-mao-asada-jpn

There are a few mistakes in the post, but I really liked this part:
Quote :
Mao.  She has an intensity and a drive, even though it seems like she’s splitting the hairs of better and best.  She has improved so much, proving most of us wrong (we thought there was not much betterness to be had).   She’s got WAY better music than almost everyone else - Chopin and Rachmaninoff are like a breath of fresh air.  And in particular, this short program, her Olympic selection, is amazing.  The short of it: (...)

Arrow  Her bun is correctly constructed.

Wow. I didn't know one article would spark questions about her quad. Lol!

I don't understand the team event. Is it only a short program?

Yea, but you've never seen 99.84 Patty.  lol!

ROTFLMAO  Yeah, not to mention, other skaters have also seen his 89 score, so they must think it's nothing special too.  Razz
For God's sake, can't Skate Canada or Canadian Olympic Association tell him to shut up already, and actually produce a good skate instead?! Seriously, the delusion and arrogance of this guy is unchallenged. And the american media is calling Plushy arrogant.  Rolling Eyes  Please, he's got nothing on this guy. Besides, Plushy is a freaking legend, Patty is only legendary for his cheated scores.

Nobu on the way to Sochi Very Happy  (in transit with former Japanese speed skaters)
Of all Japanese figure skating commentators/reporters who competed in the past, I love Nobu best already. Not only because his comments are fan and funny but also because he knows in person challenges all those skaters face when competing under IJS.  That's reflected in his comments and he's very much supportive of his former colleagues.  Smile

Thanks for the update about Nobu, linglang! :)It's going to be interesting to have a skater who fought for one of the spots on the commentating team. There's certainly no one more familiar with what the skaters had to go through to make the team!  Thumbs up!

Speaking of Mao: I just love those practice photos:
Great turn out in the attitude position: http://jto.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/w3-jack-a-20140207-e1391692186159.jpg

Is this geoblocked outside of Japan? If so, sorry.  Sweatdrop
This clip is from her yesterday practice.
Mao looks clam and comfortable even when speaking to the press. Love her soft smiles.  Razz
She explains why she fell 3A (overrotation) and why she decided to go with two 3A in total.

I agree with you inskate, and also the poster you sited before.
Her lines and positions are so beautiful.
I now miss her fan spiral.  She had such a beautiful position and extension with it.

And I hope Evan is just joking:
Evan Lysacek ‏@EvanLysacek 20m
Gracie Gold is looking very strong on ladies training session. Perfect short program run. Mao landed at least 10 perfect triple axels #sochi

He's probably knocked out by watching Mao's 3A jumps..... Razz

I'm a bit confused - Lynn tweeted that Mao did a freeskate runthrough, but this clip shows parts of the SP. Did Mao do both, or did Lynn made a mistake in her tweet?  geek

good point! It looks like from the practice rink. The practice should be for single event. Perhaps she did run-through of both? (I think there were only Mao and Akiko at the practice rink I could be wrong...I saw another clip and there were more than 2 skaters at practice. I'm not surprised if the twitter could be wrong either. )

Adding: one more clip (with 3A)

Wow! That triple axel was incredible!  Dance

Very good height and PERFECT ROTATION! And when I say perfect, I mean PERFECT...that's a +2 triple axel! not more because she doesn't have a creative or particularly difficult entry but hey! it's a freaking triple axel!

Cause Yulia is her name, Julia is an western version of this name and often used as translastion of Yulia on other languages.

news from Sponihi Annex

http://www.sponichi.co.jp/olympic/news/2014/02/08/kiji/K20140208007542201.html

In addition to the summary about the practice on 7th, the report also talk about Mao's costume choices. It is reported that she brought 2 costumes for SP and FS respectively. For the Nocturne, she has both the SA one and GPF one. And it is very likely she'll wear one for the team event and the other for individual event. As for Rach2, she brought the GPF one and a new one. It is said that the new Rach2 costume was made in Japan. It's not for sure which one she'll wear for the Rach2.
