Since I haven't seen any other mentioning of this news, I decide to attempt some rough translation of the report. I don't think I'll be able to provide a complete translation of the full article. So I'll just try to give some key points. And it's probably going to take a couple of rounds to finish up.

[Part I]

  • Prelude

In June, Mao went to Toronto for 9-day of choreography and practices. During the time, she completed the choreography of 4 programs. Originally, in contacting of choreography work, Mao said she wants to go over to work on the number for show/Ex. Then it was a surprise that Mao asked to have two more numbers for competitions. Mao flied to Toronto alone, and then drove (to the rink) by a rental car herself.

  • About FP

Lori: ...Puccini wrote the most beautiful music for 'Madame Butterfly'. And after overcoming ups and downs in her life, Mao has come to a point that she is capable of comprehending these deep feelings. She has been positioned at a different stage of life. So I think the song is a perfect match.

(During choreography, they discussed the history of women's right.) Lori: I think it is lucky that we were born in the modern time. Even today, there exists women/stories such as Madame butterfly that have already happened hundred years ago. It is from this perspective of the evolution of women's position that we made the new program.

(Adding: I think this is similar to the statement from this English news report that Mao says: ' The story is a very sad, but I want to portray a strong woman full of hope and determination,' and for doing this, Mao has been able to "fulfill Nichol's artistic ideal: a woman who is sensual, strong and brave all at the same time."

I love Lori's "artistic ideal". Can't wait to see this. Dance

This is OT, but I saw a tweet like this,
A horse named Mao no kokoro (Heart of Mao) debuts as a racehorse
at Nakayama, Chiba pref. today.  Her mother’s name is Kiss & Cry.  Laugh

https://twitter.com/piyopiyo_party

ETA:
I checked the result.
“Mao no kokoro” came in third among 16 debutantes.
Good girl!

Here are a couple of links to Mao's epic comeback performance. It has had so many rave reviews and Mao has by far (several times more views) than any other skater at the Japan Open even with several of her most viewed videos already deleted.

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x38j9bk_mao-asada-2015-japan-open-fs_sport

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kj4EyYCKvJQ

Mao moved my soul with her subtlety and sensitivity, floating like a butterfly through the travails of life with a marvelous arabesque and an expressive spread eagle as she opens her arms wide to embrace the audience: desperate because she is the Butterfly whose husband has flitted away with nobody to take his place. She covers every corner of the rink as if she is skating out of the screen in three dimensions, especially as she dashes  desperately in a forward thrust at the beginning of her step sequence: a passion spurred by loneliness. She soars all the way to the boards. Then, there is a suspenseful moment when I think she will collide before she turns to cruise smoothly to the other side.

Mao shows her versatility and flexibility with two variations on the Biellmann, one from the side out of a camel transitioning into a donut spin, and the other her beautiful tear-drop shaped Biellman near the end. Genuine in expression and spiritually transcendent, athletically challenging and artistically dazzling. The delayed rotation, erect posture, symmetrical air position, lift and beauty of her jumps are marvelous. She combines delicate lyrical expression with powerful execution as she prances and pirouettes, rhythmically shifting her weight quickly from one skate to next in her climatic step sequence.

Some of the greatest and most eloquent praise and defense of Mao has come from Yuna Kim fans, though admittedly usethis2, who made the following posts, is also a Mao fan. I hope they don't mind because the posts are so complimentary, eloquent though a bit critical of those others than Mao at times. To me, the rest paled in comparison as well. This has the makings to be as epic as Mao's Sochi LP and in terms of emotional impact and grace and sophistication of expression it is really close already, and already better than Rach II so early in the season, as are the power of her jumps which seem even better than Sochi, especially the triple axel, 2A / 3T and 3Lutz.

http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?38067-Mao-Asada/page149

Her 3Lz looks good enough to me.

I....think the PCS gaps between her and the rest were just wrong. Considering Ms. Asada's effortless gliding, near-clean execution, her beautiful lines and musicality, I think she should have gotten a Chan-like advantage over the rest of the skaters in this competition. There was not a single moment she slowed down and struggled to maintain speed while performing an intricate program. I would give a point advantage to her ice coverage alone - it is such a stark contrast to many youngsters (who are not really youngsters any more) whose skating is limited around the center of the rink.

There was not a segment that felt "forced" or "muscled out," and it was a treat to watch her executing difficult elements with a seeming ease. That aspect of her skating must have been so dramatically transpired to the audience and viewers alike in this competition, especially when you watch her skating before/after other skater(s) whose every move appears laborious and tortured.

http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?38067-Mao-Asada&p=1235692&highlight=#post1235692 post 2223
It's like I have forgotten what skating is about but Ms. Asada came back to save me from the horrors. The standard of skating without her was so low with rampant kiss-blowing and hip-thrusting. At one point I thought that Ms. Asada might have to stoop to the same standard to be competitive. Boy, I am so glad that I was wrong! Her command of ice and grace is cut above the rest of the field. Breathtaking.

I have already shed some tears watching Mao's Madame Butterfly and like grapes aging to make fine wine I savor the vintage elegance and refinement of her program more and more as the days go by. Mao's emotional complexity and depth of sophistication slowly builds in the speed of her spins and skating to a climax that lacks tension because it is a rising stream of fluid lyricism. Every movement based on the blades of her skates with her weight constantly shifting smoothly from one edge and leg to the next with very little flat two footed skating, no hunching or shoulder slouching or pumping to build power and erect posture throughout.

It is obvious how integral Coach Sato has been in building Mao's skating skills and how much skating figures has paid off because compared to the rest of the field her expertise feels like a savory relic from the past: a lovely anachronism that defies criticism. Peak PCS to me and anything less is an offense. Some people's light shines so bright you can't hide it even if you try. Not you singular but in general.

I do think that Madame Butterfly could equal Mao's Sochi LP, and that it is already close, but not surpass it because each masterpiece has its own time and place that I don't want to debase through a ranking system, but rather treasure each in my memory, and Mao's performance at the Japan Open is already a beautiful jewel.

What she showed at the JO, I would rank in her top 5 performances.
If the scoring were fair and just, it would win ANY World Championship in history. It has 7 clean triples of all 6 types; logically no other Worlds program can beat that.

Reputation wise, this was the most critical performance of her continuing career, because it established decisively that she alone is the master of the triple axel, and her technique is irrefutably superior and deserving because it is the most reliable. For everyone else, the 3A is merely a novelty.
This performance basically defined her technical reputation for the coming years, in a good way.

But she said she only achieved 55% percent of what is possible with this program, so it could turn out to be beyond anything ever seen.

http://olympics.nbcsports.com/2015/10/05/shoma-uno-japan-open-mao-asada-adelina-sotnikova-ashley-wagner-gracie-gold-figure-skating-winter-olympics/

I was hoping badly she would choose the Maria Callas version; she delivered. That is the best and most appropriate rendition, the indiscernible words are much less distracting and the voice is more of a pure instrument.

I knew from the day she announced her return she would come back with a Lutz:

In fact, the Lutz may very well be the reason she came back, to be 100% "complete".

The one she is doing in practice is insane, and may very well turn out to be the best in history if she can repeat it in competition.

Nice post BelieveinMaoSelf I think I accidentally gave it a negative vote. I really don't know how that voting thing works and I don't see a positive or negative sign like I do on your post shar, but thanks for telling me.

Here are some great photos from Mao's Madame Butterfly performance that were easy to save. Mao's pose with her arm and hand reaching out to touch an absent loved one in the first photo reminds me of Michelangelo's painting entitled Creation of Adam located on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
I believe this shows how Mao, as she does in her Sochi LP, has such a classic and for me an almost holy sense in her devotion to an artistic purpose that embraces her own culture but also crosses over to include Western archetypes, which makes her appeal universal. I know it has been said before that she has an almost monk like devotion to perfecting her performances. This is why numerical quantification of her performances often seem to be a degradation of the spiritual inspiration they give me. But, she also likes to have fun and be a fighter. As these photos show, she displays a great range of emotion from deep melancholy and hopefulness to great joy. Mao does hold the world record in the LP in the eyes of very many and in my own as well.

hotstuff400 8 months ago
I know a lot of pro figure skaters and they too think that apart from Mao's 2014 Nocturne SP World record score, she should've also gotten LP World record score on her Sochi Rach LP. That 8 triple program is just untouchable.

Welcome back to the forum believeinmaoself, and I agree with your post, i'm sooo happy to see Mao back, finally some quality skating, a skater who can show the complete package. I missed her soo much during the offseason, this one performance and one competition she attended made it more interesting then all the competitions from last year.

and like you I think Mao may have alot more in store for us we may not have expected, it will be sooo interesting to see her during the season

I reeeeallyyyy want Mao to break the record in the free, since I consider her the true owner of it!

Here is a really beautiful picture of Mao in her Madame Butterfly performance. Her expression and elegant and graceful position are so poignant and compelling as if an angel had just touched down from the heavens to grace us with her presence.

Where did you find this pic? So cute.

Are there any news about Mao? CoC starts next week. I'm so excited. Dance I keep praying Eurosport will broadcast the ladies SP and LP. Worship
And judging by the very generous PCS scores Ashley got at SC, Mao should go above 70. Yep!

1. I found the picture while looking through Mao's images on google (I was bored last night and couldn't sleep).

2. No new news on Mao (which I hope is a good thing).

3. Mao should have been getting PCS above 70 a long time ago. But unlike ANY other skater (besides Satoko), Mao has to fight tooth and nails just to get a decent score, let alone a good/great score. So I will not be surprise if Mao only gets high 60's to barely breaking the 70's (as in 70.03 in PCS) for a clean performance (with a 3A).

Oh I know that. It's been pissing me off for years. She never broke 70 in PCS not even in Sochi while Yuna, Caro and Adelina all got middle 70. No comment. What I meant is, the judges seem to be in very generous mode. When a skater like Ashley gets 8.25 in SS and over 8 for transitions, Mao must get at least very high 8 or low 9. Ashley can sell her programs like there's no tomorrow, but no way does she have SS worthy of 8. She's not good enough for 8 in this department. I'm really hoping that the ISU has come to its senses (with certain skaters retired) and will finally start treating Mao with fairness that she deserves.

When Ash and Gracie get 68 + and Medvedeva 67+, there's no other way but to give Mao 70+. And I fon't mean 70.01 but low 70. Anything else would be a complete joke. She's in a league of her own at the moment. But than again, it's ISU we're talking about here...
I hope Mao will skate lights out next week, giving judges no choice but to go fair on her. Twisted Evil

That great picture of Mao, shar, with her mother and sister.

Here is a website that has some beautiful photos of Mao in a blue dress. She looks like she is dressed up like a high fashion stewardess. Positively stunning! To the left of the pictures of Mao, you can see a video of Mao performing to "I Got Rhythm" while her SP music for this season plays, "Bei Mir Bist Du Shoen" and then you can see her perform the real step sequence for this season's SP program. It's really snazzy and sophisticated.

I don't know if this has been posted but here is what must be Mao's new costume for her SP. A stunning bright red dress. Simply gorgeous!

I wish Mao the best of success at the Cup of China.

The opening (new costume for SP?)

I can't wait to see Mao perform in a week, though I admit I am really nervous. She glides swiftly and lightly across the ice as a swan soaring through the skies and she is the definition of breathtaking elegance, athleticism and artistry. The walls erected to hold back tears are bound to fall with her all out assault on the emotions. I just feel fortunate I get to see her perform competitively again.

Here is another beautiful and soulful photo of Mao's pose at the end of Madame Butterfly.

With the way they are handing out PCS so far, I won't accept PCS lower than a 72 for Mao (barring a major disaster in her pros). And even then a 72 is the lowest I can accept. I hope they won't screw up Rika also like how they screwed up Satoko's PCS. It looked like in SA small jumps = small PCS but +1 for every tano you do.

Rosewood from FSU posted this Chinese article on Mao. It looks interesting although I only ran it through Google Translate... Razz

This is a good summary of Mao's career. In the last part of this article, it's quoting an interview with Lori which was done earlier when Lori was invited to China to help with Chinese skaters of the choreography. The interview with Lori was published in Chinese (http://mp.weixin.qq.com/s?__biz=MjM...n=6b0ef3484e048de94d1586d6b1ae8888&scene=0#rd). I've been trying to work on the translation of the part in which the interviewer and Lori talk about Mao. So the translation is as follows:

Q: I also want to discuss Mao Asada, who has decided to resume competitions and will soon take part in COC. Many people have made predictions that Mao would choose to retire after the painful Sochi Olympic season.
Lori: That’s perhaps the thought of some people. I’m not sure what to say. People always think differently. But for those who have doubted about Mao’s return, I just want to say to them: what kind of ideas or thoughts have you been holding to come to such shallow conclusion?

Q: That was because some may think: she’s already 25, and she’s won WC so many times and obtained the highest achievement. So from a certain viewpoint it’s already the highest level of fulfillment.
Lori: And so? It actually means nothing (for Mao) to discuss these. Her strong well and desire to continue skating is not constrain by her past achievements or failure. Carolina has proved this: she has been experiencing the rising and falling in her competitive career and no one had thought highly of her prior to Sochi. But people with strong mindset can win over all these ‘impossibility’. Their well and desire can be far more powerful than common prejudges.
I’ve always considered it is an important job to train the skaters for stronger mindset and inspire their courage. (Lori talks about the tragedy of losing her mother at such an young age)…and it took a long while for Mao to really recover from the tragic lost and return to the normal status of training. I always think that the lose of her mother happened too close to Sochi, and she had to bare the pressure from the Olympics soon afterwards. The pressure from participating in Olympics for any competitor is beyond imagination. They bare the expectations not only from the fans but also so much from their nations.

Q: Not to mention that Mao is from a country of such tradition in FS
L: Yes. But now it’s different. After the SP in Sochi, she has learned to let everything go, and now she can skate for the sake of her own passion for FS. I tell everyone: never feel less even if you’ve never won an Olympic gold medal. There are so many excellent athletes in the world who have never won Olympic gold (incl. Kurt Browning and Janet Lynn). None of them are Olympic gold medalist but that doesn’t make their lives less without the gold. I am very happy now (also encouraging her) that Mao has a very good team supporting her. I often tell her that not to be feared of the fact that she’s not an Olympic champion. I told her: you’ve experienced the loss of mother and what’s more important now is that you’ve overcome the most difficult part and now you can re-group and start a new journey of joy and happiness in FS. You’ve reached the highest state of humanity, most of all, don’t forget where you begin, and to pick up the happiness again while always looking forward; for these provide your with the power to overcome any difficulty. So, if returning to the skating and competitions would bring Mao happiness, then why not go for it?

Mao will only be better, not only in competitions, but most of all, she is welling to reach for a higher level. And she is welling to do anything (to reach her goal). Of course there are means other than figure skating. But if skating helps her through the process of reaching higher level, she will keep on. Figure skating is such a cruel sport and full of difficulties. Only competitors with strong desire and well-power will be able to stay and keep competing. Right now Mao in her mind and body is stronger than any time in the past. I can feel deeply her change when collaborating with her: the dark cloud lingering in her mind has all gone. She has evolved to become more aggressive, with more joy and curiosity, also liveliness. After experiencing such life experience, she’s open another door to the new world and reborn.
This is why I said earlier that people should not discuss anymore things such as “she’s already a WC, she doesn’t have to work hard anymore, and she should just stop right there…” these thoughts are too shallow. They underestimate the high quality of human well and neglect the original passion for FS from the competitors. There is not doubt that Mao will keep on skating.
