Why did Mao get -1 deduction??? confused
The only logical explanation is that she didn't end with the music (time deduction), but it looked fine on my feed. Guess not. Whirly

The score makes sense to me, with one DG and a pop... Sad I just wonder what the deduction was for. Mao didn't seem to finish after the music, but maybe the music ran for too long..? Maybe Shanetta adited the music a little or something... It happened a few times to elite skaters. Sad

Wow, Haruka's really ON! Confetti

Day after tomorrow. I just realized the ladies in the final group were all skating their programs past 10PM; I hope they can all rest well and come into the FS refreshed. Faint2
I'll be keeping KeyHole TV on, since FujiTV's Sporto (should begin in about 10 minutes or so) is slated to air 2-3 of today's SP. study

So unless I've heard things incorrectly, it appears that Akiko received a level 4 on all of her spins and the SLSS as well. Shocked

Sporto just mentioned that Mao did indeed receive a time-over deduction - something about Mao's starting pose being too fast (her SP music is 2:53) affecting the total length of her actual skating in the SP, since the clock starts and stops when a skater begins/ends their movement, not the actual length of the music. Oh jeeze, this is total nit-picking.

At least Sporto is finally giving constructive information regarding underrotation and even the main caster questioned how Mao seems to be constantly plagued by having a predetermined image of being a "habitual underrotater" by the judges. Sweatdrop

Actually, it's not that surprising, Akiko's footwork has always been excellent... She has variation in speed in her footwork sequence, which is a feature Mao's footwork doesn't have. IIRC she got lvl4 before in some level B competition/s...

I think the scoring was still quite generous for Mao... She had no 3-3, one DG, one pop... Not many skaters would get that score while messing up their programs so much. I loved Mao's layback and spirals, but those things can only get a skater so far.

I'm a bit worried for the LP... I actually thought Mao had more chance to get ahead in the SP. In addition to there being more jumps in the LP and therefore a higher risk of messing up, the Bells LP wasn't appreciated internationally even when it actually had some transitions... pale I'm afraid that without solid jumps and more interesting choreo the judges might give a Caro-Z treatment to Mao...

Mainichi Shinbun online confirms that Akiko did indeed receive all level 4's on her non-jump elements: http://mainichi.jp/select/today/news/20100128k0000m050014000c.html

Kudos to Akiko - if anyone deserved to receive a level 4 on their step sequences, it would be her, Mao and CaroK. I have to be honest though; the level 4 ratification did caught me by surprise. Akiko and a few others have also achieved a level 4 on their layback without the Biellmann this season, so I can't argue with that either (the sideways Arrow standard layback Arrow catchfoot/haircutter position + change of edge + increase in speed satisfies the level 4 requirements + sufficient rotation).

Well, I'm slightly bummed to see the overall low scores today, but with a UR on the 3A and a popped flip (not to mention the deduction) it can't be helped that Mao's SP score didn't crack 60. I hope she can put this behind her quickly and attack the FS. She is, after all, in good condition as far as practices are concerned which makes this year's 4CC considerably different from that of last year.

I read this all the time, but what exactly is "appreciated internationally?" As far as I know - and I pointed this out before - the judges have given Bells a higher PCS average than any of her other long programs in the past. If there's any part we should be worried about, it's the jumps, not the PCS scores. Besides, Mao is still Japan's #1 lady and is not exactly in the same position as either Tono or Kozu. I can't imagine a sudden drop in PCS here. Lips sealed

Here's Mao's SP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxhtSNrMQWc. I just finished watching it. The 3A looked a bit underrotated, was it downgraded? Too bad for the Flip, too. But her spins and spirals always make me wowed! I was surprised to see she received a deduction. Since she didn't fall or end the program after the music finished, it must've been on a spin or spiral. And it's great to see Akiko doing well! I'm not surprised she received a level 4 on her step sequence. They're always fabulous!

Go Mao and Akiko!
