Just curious. Do they really give out a medal just for the SP? , cuz I saw a picture about that in an earlier post.
Yup. cat Mini-medals (at least that's what I call them) are awarded to the top 3 skaters in the SP and the FS.

Ok, so I finally got to watch Mao's triumphant skate! flower

Wow, Mao, wow! I am so proud of you!

You were mobbed by the Korean media as soon as you got off the plane; a hotel employee caught you on hidden camera and posted it on the internet; Korean 'fans' were making threats so the KSU assigned you a team of bodyguards; and TAT couldn't make it because she's in the hospital. That must have been really tough.

You had problems in the SP, you were nervous going into the LP, but you just went out and killed it!

Congrats on getting credit for two triple axels and winning! I guess Korea really is a lucky place for you, after all! Very Happy

Mao says she thinks her performance in the free program will translate into a good performance in the SP at the Olympics. I think so too. Yep!

And I think Mao will skate the heck out of this LP at the Olympics, and when she thrusts her hands in the air with the final bell toll, it will resonate in the hearts of everyone watching. Faint2

It WILL be a masterpiece, like chineseteacup said. But I do think that only has become possible because Mao suffered so much in the first half of the season. It helped make her into the person who can tell this compelling, passionate story. Yep!

And now here are a bunch of thoughts/replies, in rather haphazard form. (This is what happens when I'm stuck at work all day and can't post. Sweatdrop )

1) The score was a bit disappointing; I am a bit annoyed that the judges kept the PCS so low, BUT I am thrilled for Mao, because I think she gave a performance that she can be satisfied with. Once again, she proved to herself that she could do it when it counts, and I think that's the most important part. I know inskate still doesn't like the program, and I think that's a valid opinion. Clearly there are judges (and fans too, undoubtedly) who do not like Mao's LP. My family doesn't like the music. But I am optimistic that Mao can win them over the same way she won over PJ Kwong. Mao skates from the heart; in this program she bares her very soul, and I think at the Olympics she will make everyone feel her passion. And the scores will reflect this. (PJ Kwong's comments were AMAZING and totally made my day. Thanks to sapphiresky for posting! Very Happy )

2) I do think this performance is exactly what Mao needed going into the Olympics. She got credit for both triple axels, which has got to give her confidence. But she still made a few small errors, and her score was lower than she would want, so she can also be motivated to practice really hard for the Olympics.

3) I realize that this is the first time she's come back in a long program since 2007 Grand Prix Final. Over the past season, the pattern has been that if Mao made a mistake in the short program, she would make mistakes in the long program (or if she skated well in the short program, she'd skate well in the long). Her performance in the short would translate into her performance in the long program. This is the first time in a long time where she was able to banish her demons from the short program and put on an almost-clean long program! I think it is very important that Mao was able to do this--she proved to herself that she can do it when it counts, even if she’s nervous.

4) I do agree with inskate that Mao needs a new costume. The ruffles are too much for me. She could have the same costume (same color scheme) but with a V-neck (like her 2008 Worlds SP) costume. But I agree with polosatik that Mao probably will have two new costumes for the Olympics.Thumbs up!

5) I agree with mingming that Mao probably pigged out on yakiniku and Korean food after the competition! Hell, no! Hopefully she gets to try the bibimbap like she wanted to!

Is there going to be an EX?? I hope so!! Very Happy

Mao's Interview queen

http://hochi.yomiuri.co.jp/vancouver2010/skating/news/20100129-OHT1T00285.htm

What do you think about this competition?
-I got power from many fans and Korean crowd's cheers. Got to make two 3As was really good, but I still have a problem on SP, so I score about 50 points for my performances.

What was the difference between SP and LP?
-Before SP I kept good condition on practice, so I didn't worry. But as soon as going onto rink for 6 minutes practice, I got nervous. But I could skate with good tension on FS, so I hope I can skate like that at next competition.

Did you get back confidence?
-Thogh I'd landed first 3A, failed the second. But today I did smoothly. FS is more difficult than SP, so thinking like this, it was nice. I want to go to Olympics with this thinking.

What do you want to do now?
- I want to eat Korean foods, bibimbap!(You are right,Batsuchan ROTFLMAO )

She does commentary for CBC streams, and writes articles once in a while. Her reaction to Bells was similar to Nicky Slater's (British Eurosport) opinion of the Masquerade FS now that I think about it - they both felt the music was too heavy and didn't make much sense for a skater like Mao, but after watching the 4CC FS (NHK 08 for Nicky), they praised the program, mentioning how it brought out so much emotion and power. cat

PJ did mention though, that when it isn't performed to its fullest the Bells program does fizz out - which I think a lot of us do agree with including myself. Sweatdrop

My guilty desire is to see a silver or gold dress with a cross bell motif like so: http://images.quickblogcast.com/0/3/4/0/1/118265-110430/bell.jpg Hell, no!

Are there any exhibition videos yet?
I'm not sure if it's a glitch but the first page - and just the first page - of CBC's "full shows" streams temporarily lifted their IP restriction. Shocked
http://www.cbc.ca/video/#/Sports/Figure_Skating/Full_Shows/

For now, the first page (universally watchable streams) consists of the Gala, Men SP+FS, Ladies FS, and Ice Dance OD+FD. Cheering

But honestly Masquerade was terribly repetitive ... I find this program a masterpiece. If she hits, she'll win FOR SURE.

Here are some more snippets from articles:

1) Apparently Mao called her mom right away after the competition to let her know what happened. Aww cute! Many Hearts
http://japanese.joins.com/article/article.php?aid=125750&servcode=600&sectcode=600

2) According to this article...
http://news.livedoor.com/article/detail/4577660/
Shizuka Arakawa said, "I think this is the perfect ending for her last competition before the Olympics. She was having trouble with the triple axel, but she was able to rotate them fully twice. The fact that the timing has become good is the most important sign, I think."

3) http://hochi.yomiuri.co.jp/vancouver2010/skating/news/20100129-OHT1T00241.htm

They asked her how close she thinks she is to the gold medal, and she said 80%!

Mao said, "Today's free program will translate into my Olympic SP. I want to skate with a good nervous feeling."

Yup, and she can think, 'gee, I only have to do *one* triple axel! Easy peasy!" flower

Thanks so much for the link, clovera!! Very Happy

It allowed me to transcribe all of PJ Kwong's comments from the FS, so here they are:

(before she skates)
This is going to be a bit of an uphill climb for Mao Asada. Let's see if she can do it.

Mao has terrific speed. (As she heads into the 3F-2Lo-2Lo)

Innovative entry into that 3T.

Very, very strenuous and challenging footwork sequence.

I like the variations of positions in this combination spin.

(after the performance)
The very first time I saw this program, I thought to myself that it was ponderous and heavy, and I didn't really understand the choice. I have to say, seeing her skate it like this tonight though, the music obviously fills her...and makes her skate with unbelievable passion and strength. She really is a force to be reckoned with. But when this program doesn't work, it really doesn't work.

Terrific performance from Mao Asada.

(after the replays)
Really a thrilling performance. I really enjoyed that.
