Every Japanese Kanji character has several different pronunciations.
"信" can be pronounced "nobu" or "shin"

It's quite common in Japan to name a baby using the same Kanji character after a father/mother or grandfather/mother but pronounce it differently.

I've looked into my Kanji dictionary. It gives 16 different pronunciations for this Kanji character "信" when it comes to naming, for example aki, koto, sada, shige ... Whirly

I remember Nobu saying that some kids made fun of him at school because he was a descendant of the famous feudal lord Nobunaga Oda. So maybe he wanted his son to have a name with the symbol '信' in it, but doesn't sound so similar to Nobunaga like his own name! Laugh
Shintaro is a nice decent name for a boy I think. There are lots of parents in Japan who give very strange names to their children thesedays (as you probabaly know!), so I'm relieved Nobu isn't one of them. Yep!

Oh! It's quite old-fashioned to use "-tarou" but this may bring a new trend.
As in the old time, boys usually named as "-suke", and in one period this
"-suke" trend come back like "Shinnosuke". My friend is "Ryosuke". Once I
have colleague named "tarou" and I was surprised and confirmed again
"You are TAROU?" (Tarou and Hanako are regular.) It is too common but
has impact. To translate to English, it will be "Nobu junior". Isn't it great?

He realized that a part of his shoelace was broken in practice a few days before free skating but he thought it would be ok to use it. At the game, he was so nervous and he tied it too tight. That's why it got broken so hard. and he says he doesn't regret it. Yep!

Quick update:
Tono won Kinki Regionals. He didn't max his combos in the FS (his only combo was the 3A-3T), but all of his jumps were clean incl. a 4T. Live commentary folks mentioned his program having a comedic step sequence and new sit spin positions for a total of 160.07 in that segment. He didn't exactly max out the levels on the spins either, but I'm sure that'll be fixed by the time the GPS starts. Razz

Thank you for the links, clovera!

I read (Google-translated Razz) reports from Nobunari's website and I was a bit worried after the SP. The fans mentioned that two of Nobu's spins were discredited and there was an edge warning on the flip combo. I was confused, because Nobunari never did a flip combo in the SP, and his flip always had a very inside edge take-off.
Now that I looked at the protokols, it loooks like Nobu's jump layout has changed - I think the program is designed to attempt 4T-3T, 3A, 3Lz later in the season. So maybe because of changing the combo suddenly caused Nobunari to approach his first combo as it was 3Lz-3T, hence the shaky edge... 3F was clean in the LP, so I don't think it's an issue with the flip jump itself.

Yay for quad in the LP! Smile That's a great score, considering the jump combos were not maxed out and the spins still got low levels. But there's still time ti fix those things. Considering that Nobu had to cancel a trip to Canada because of his son's birth, it's probably not surprising that some of the technical details have yet to be polished.

And speaking of Shintaro, Nobu showed his photo!

So adorable! flower

Here's the program that I took the screencap from:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIiGC_oKRRA
There are also clips from Nobu's new SP. The clips are very short, but I think the program looks very promising, I just love the music. It looks like the costume is a work in progress, though. The shirt is gorgeous, but I think the pants are just normal practice pants... If you look closely, they don't match the shirt. Smile'

I hope they will show some news from the LP as well...

Btw, here's a vid of his quad in the FP:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtaVHfUTX7I

Though he was in 2nd place only for the SP, mainly because 2 of this spins weren't counted in the scores (from some articles, it seems his hips were too high, and according to protocols, they couldn't be approved), he seems to have done very well in FP, so he won the Kinki area competition with an overall score of more than 220, scoring over 20 points more than Tatsuki Machida who was in 2nd place! Yep!

The part of the music that opens his program is the same as Miki's!

Too sweet!

And that was an amazing 4T!

There are not any photos available where Nobu's face would be visible (to keep her privacy), but in this video she is shown (from the back) preparing a dinner for Nobu and talking with him (6:12):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKSlgpEGs7g
She has really cute voice. Smile
There are also a few practice clips! And a cute clip of Nobunari practicing together with Daisuke (1:27) and both of them are laughing. It's good to see they get along so well. Smile

Quote :

Yes, as I mentioned on the first page of this thread, Nobunari's LP is to Grieg's Piano Concerto, the first and the third movement. Smile Nobunari actually released his music on his official fanpage just after he withdrew from Thornhill Summer Skate. Smile
It looks like the programs will be quite different - Nobu's program is serious/mature at first, but has a playful final step sequence. I wish they would show some more clips on TV! From the fan reports, both SP and FS were very unusual and fit Nobunari's style perfectly. flower

Bad news: it looks like Nobunari suffers from a knee injury:
http://hochi.yomiuri.co.jp/sports/winter/news/20110208-OHT1T00308.htm

According to the article, Nobunari got injured before the Winter Universiade. The injury forced him to change his jump layout (no quads, only one 3A in the FS and none in the Gala).
He ended up winning, but wasn't satisfied with his programs:
http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/sp20110204f1.html
"I have achieved my target of winning the gold medal but that was my worst performance of the season."

He was scheduled to visit a hospital on 10th February for a check-up.

Ugh, what bad luck. pale I hope he gets better in time to practice quads again before World Championships. Worship

I hope Nobunari feels better by Worlds. After what happened last year, I really want to see him go out there and skate well.

It's surprises me because he has arguably the softest knees in skating right now. I can't read Japanese so I'm guessing it was probably a sudden injury that came with landing wrong or something. I do hope he gets well soon. Yep, Sadly

Thank you! Okami for the pic! It's really cute. Too sweet!
