PostSubject: Birthday video for Mao participators   Tue Aug 31, 2010 7:15 am

Since nobody's doing it, I decided to create a new topic on making Mao a birthday message video. This idea has been discussed in Mao's birthday topic here http://www.maoasadaforum.com/mao-chat-f5/mao-s-birthday-t839.htm. Please that thread first, if you're new to the topic. Razz

This thread can be used for those who want to participate to write their names. Above anything, I think we need a list of participants first. I think those who are willing, should say so here, along with info on what they can help out with (eg. editing, music, art, dvd creating, uploading, translation etc.). Also opininons on how the video should be sent to Mao (eg. dvd, upload and email link, both etc.), and ideas on the contents of the video (eg. clips of everyone actually saying happy birthday, everybody's messages being introduced in text with photo or illust images of themselves, or a mixture of both etc.), would be useful I think. Detailed ideas of the contents may not be necessary at this point though, cause we may never reach a conclusion in such short time.

Anyway, I'm creating this topic so we can all acknowledge who'll be participating, and willing to do what. I'll go first:

  • I'd like to participate, and can help out with the editing and Japanese translation.

  • I think everyone should be able to choose in which way they want to send their messages from the following:

    1. prepare a video clip of themselves sending a birthday message to Mao in person

    2. prepare a birthday message in text, both in their own language and a translation of it in Eng or Japanese provided by a photo or illustration representing themselves

    3. an audio clip of the writer reading out the message can be attached to 2

  • I think we should create a DVD and post it to Mao, and at the same time upload the video on Youtube so it can be shared by others (no need to accept comments to avoid trolls). At the same time I think it should be uploaded somewhere for all participants to be able to view.

  • All messages no matter how they are submitted, should be provided with Japanese translations so that Mao can understand them. It would also be better to have an Eng translation for all messages as well, so that all participants can understand too.

Thank you for creating a new thread! Very Happy

Of course, I am very willing to participate. For my part, I am trying my best to spread the word to other Mao fans (via forums, etc). I can also try to edit audio files (not videos, please! I am inexperienced and I want Mao to see the BEST) to help if we would be understaffed.

Potato, are we really required to provide Japanese translations? (I can't speak Japanese! *sniff*) What if we just send our video/message/audio to someone who can make English translations and when it is ALL done, another would put Japanese translations. This splits the work, but it'll be... Er, time-consuming.

(Anyone here who has a Pixiv account, or at least familiar with it. I stalk people there because there are some who draw Mao fanarts! Can anyone here ask them if they would be willing to draw/have their illustrations in the birthday video?)

I totally agree. Non-Japanese speakers need only to provide Eng translations of their messages and somebody can translate them into Japanese for Mao in the end, I think. Smile

That's what I thought.
I'm so excited with the idea, though I wouldn't like it to be sent to youtube (you know, so many haters there). I guess we need to make 2 versions then. Razz

Ooh, I'm excited about this project too!
Pochi-san pretty much has the translating-aspect covered, although I'll be more than happy to help in double-checking everything and put my serious case of OCD to good use. Sweatdrop

As far as messages are concerned, I'll be able to provide [2]...I'm not sure if my USB microphone is good enough to record a clear-sounding message for [3] but I'll give it a shot.
I actually do *not* have a mixi account so I have no idea if any Japanese mixi users - I know the Mao community there is fairly active - are interested in participating.

I'm not particularly active on pixiv myself (more of a lurker as with klarification), but I'll give dottaishi-san a message to see if he's interested in joining us. :joker:

Maybe our Korean members here can give a heads-up to those at Mao's "fan cafe?" They've created some lovely artwork and helped organize gifts for Mao in the past as well. Yep!

ETA2: Blocking all comments is definitely an option on YT, but the unlisted video feature is also an option to consider.

I definitely want to participate, but I don't have a video camera, or even a pic camera right now (but maybe that's a good thing since the video might be on yt!) ! I will definitely figure out something to submit. Also, I think anyone who has any fan art or pics they took of Mao that they want to be in the video should be included too.

Also. here is a link to a translator:
http://www.google.com/ig/directory?hl=en&type=gadgets&url=www.google.com/ig/modules/dictionary.xml##
I think you have to have a google account to use it, but Yahoo has one too that anyone can use. And there's probably other language translators out there too.

Unlisted video option is a great idea, clovera! I didn't know till you told me they had that. I thought there was only the 25 people option. Only those participating, or can be trusted can be notified of the URL, and there shouldn't be a problem then. We just have to be careful not to post the URL anywhere in public, but just PM or email.

I'd definitely love to have the Mao fans in Korea participate. And I think including artworks of the fans would be wonderful, too. I was also hoping Star85 might want to present her music. We all know she sings great, and in that way we'll have both clips, images and music we can put in it.

Btw, if we are considering sending this to Mao on DVD, we won't necessarily have to combine the messages, the music, and the artworks in just 1 video clip. The whole thing shouldn't be that long to view, cause I'm sure Mao is a busy person, but we don't have to worry that much about how long a video messages or audio messages would be. We can also split the editing and translating jobs in sections. Smile

Yes, I thought about submitting some of my music, but I don't have anything ready right now that would really be appropriate for this type of thing... I have this really pretty ballad called "My Heart Belongs to You" that would be good, but it has to be completely redone Sad... It will probably be ready by her next bday... I do have another pretty song all done, but it's kind of about being really hurt, and broken hearted... but I do have in instrumental version of it somewhere... I can dig it up if you think it would be a good idea.

Yay for more people helping out!

I can help by creating/maintaining the sign-up list on Google Docs. I will also try to promote the project and recruit people, though I'm going to ask for help on that. All I need are regular posters on FSU, Golden Skate, or other major figure skating forums (it could even be the same person) to post explaining our project. (I can even write it for you and all you need to do is copy and paste). That's all you would need to do- I'll take care of keeping track of who signed up. (The reason for doing this is I'm only a lurker on those forums and I think it'd be better received if a regular posted..plus if I post in the wrong place and it gets moved, etc, all that could be avoided by someone who knows their way around). I'll take care of facebook, twitter, other skaters' fansites, etc, but I also need help spreading the word on non-English forums and fansites.

I think we definitely should have a DVD. The consensus now seems to be submitting whatever people want to or are able to do (fanart, handwritten messages, audio, video, etc). That seems good, since some people are better at other things (for example, I'm not artistic at all so fanwork or even paper messages would be hard for me) and have different technology to use, etc.

I think something we should definitely do is include the participant's country somehow into every entry, even video, so Mao can see the whole range of diverse fans she has.

Hi everyone,

I'd like to participate; I'll paint a card birthday for Mao with a message in Spanish (I'll submit English translation), I would also like to send a recording of myself reading the message in Spanish. I'll submit it to maobirthdayproject@gmail.com, before September 17th. Is is ok bellarina???

I have a lot of ideas but very little experience making videos. It would be great to make a video starting with a compilation of the best moments during Mao's career, so far (I am sure there is much to come though) and then all of our greetings. What do you think?

There is not much time left , let's make our best to give Mao what she deserves!!!!

So the actual list is:

Thank you!

I think while spreading the word, we should agree already on the general guidelines. I'll combine PochinkoPotanko and bellarina's ideas:

In celebration of Asada Mao's 20th birthday, the fans at Ballerina on Ice are trying to organize a little birthday present for our favorite Japanese skater. We're going to compile a DVD with happy birthday messages from fans all over the world. Then, we'll send it to Mao herself!

Here are the guidelines for those who are willing to join:

• Participate in the official sign-up thread here. You can also email Ballerina on Ice if you're not part of the forums or uncomfortable with the idea of publicly giving your email. Here's the email address: maobirthdayproject@gmail.com

• Choose whether you would like to participate in:

  • 1. Private video to Mao, which could be seen by her only.

  • 2. Public video, which would be uploaded to Youtube. However, we would use the unlisted video option so that there would be no privacy issues and to avoid negative comments from haters/bashers/trolls.

  • 3. Both public and private videos, where you can make two versions of your message.

• Choose how you would want to submit your message from the following:

  • 1. Prepare a video clip of yourself sending a birthday message to Mao in person. (Don't forget to say the name of your country!)

  • 2. Prepare a birthday message in text, both in your own language and a translation of it in English or Japanese provided by a photo/illustration/avatar representing yourself. (Don't forget to put the name of your country!)

  • 3. An audio clip of the writer reading out the message that can be attached to [2]

  • 4. Optional: Fanarts/blends/manipulation graphics that can be attached to [1] or [2]

• Handwritten messages and artworks (illustrations, photo-collages, etc.) would be preferable to be over 500pix (both in width and height), but below 1500pix (both width & height). On the other hand avatars (photos, illustrations etc.) of yourselves to go along with your messages, can start from around a minimum of 300pix (width x height) Avoid using .gif files please!

• Preferred formats are as follows:

[*]Audio: wav, mp3
[*]Video: wmp, mp4, avi

• For both videos and audio files, maximum time is 30 seconds.

• Deadline is on September 13, Japanese time

• If you want to participate in the making of it (subbing, video editing, promotion, etc), please visit this thread: http://www.maoasadaforum.com/mao-chat-f5/birthday-video-for-mao-participators-t842.htm. If you want to read the origins of this idea and how it started, check out this thread: http://www.maoasadaforum.com/mao-chat-f5/mao-s-birthday-t839-30.htm If you have any concerns or inquiries, email us at: maobirthdayproject@gmail.com.

Anything else I'm missing before I post these guidelines on other forums? Question

edit: Added formats for video and audio files, as well as sizes of images. Also changed the deadline to Sept 10 (tentative)
edit2: Changed the deadline to the final one

klarification, that's awesome. I think that should be the official recruiting post. Smile Hmm, people seem to be signing up in this thread, so should we make this the official sign-up thread for submissions (I think PPotato started it as a sign-up for people helping make the actual video?) and ask the mods to close the other one?

I've put down those of you who mentioned you were submitting something, but could you guys specify if you want to be included in the private or public video or both?

klarification, alyssa, polosatik, PPotato, and clovera: are you guys submitting in addition to helping with the other stuff? Star85, should I put you down too?

I'd like to make a message for Mao but maybe using graphics and then a video greeting from my niece. I already told her to greet Mao in the video and she's now excited to do it. Very Happy

I'd have loved to be able to help in making the dvd but I have so much work to do right now I know I wouldn't be able to work on it. Sad

I'm sure Star85 and roma is in so I added their names. Everyone, please don't forget to add your names to the list as we go along. Worship

I want to thank klarification for the brilliant suggestion on how to promote the project. I think we need to set a deadline for sending vids, messages, etc. IMO if we want the DVD to reach Mao by her birthday, I think we have no choice but to set it around 10th Sept.

I also think most importantly, that we should first concentrate on the contents of the private DVD, and discuss whether some of it should be uploaded in Youtube later on, cause there isn't much time. Everyone can send in what they want only Mao to hear and see first. I also think that if we end up having too many materials, we have no choice but to leave the final decesions of selection to those who will be in the editing team.

I was thinking of promoting the project myself in our Japanese figure skating forum, but to be honest, if I do there are going to be a tremendous amount of folks who want to join probably. As it seems I'm the only one who's announced candidacy for editing so far, it might not be possible to edit hundreds and thousands of peoples messages in due time. I'm a bit worried about that...so I'm only going to tell some main members in the Japanese forum about this. Besides that, it seems somebody in our country is also making a birthday message video for Mao in Japanese, so ours can be based mostly on fans outside Japan and members in our forum.

Btw, in my case the most preferable format for audio messages would be WAV. For video messages I'd say wmp. But this is only because I'm used to working with them, and I imagine I can manage other formats. But if you all want to be on the safe side, WAV and wmp as possible plz.

And Star85, yes I think you should send in any music you think will be suitable for the project, instrumental or not. We'll definitely need BGM when the text messages and artworks are shown. We can use music from CDs etc., but I think your music would be much more original, and it would be cool to have as much elements created by us as possible. If you could upload it somewhere on the net and tell me the URL, I can download them. Or you can simply ask me my email via PM, and send it to me. Whichever way you prefer, will be okay for me. Smile

Sorry I have no editing skills to offer, but I would like to submit something for the video (if this is the sign up thread now Razz). My submission can be included in both the public and private video. But I have a question: what sort of image sizes do we want for the handwritten notes and avatars?

Handwritten messages and artworks (illustrations, photo-collages, etc.) would be preferable to be over 500pix (both in width and height), but below 1500pix (both width & height) IMO. On the other hand avatars (photos, illustrations etc.) of yourselves to go along with your messages, can start from around a minimum of 300pix (width x height).

Basically when you create a video clip, the sizes of images will result in the visual quality. Think of it like this; all the high quality or HD videos in Youtube use extremely large sized footages and non-motional images. So the more bigger the better for all materials. But in my case I think there should be a max limit to the size of images such as 1500px, otherwise it's going to be too tough for the editors a bit, or say, their PCs.

But we all should try to hand in large sized high quality material as much as possible, for if we are sending this to Mao on DVD, she might watch it on her tv. As long as she watches it on her PC, low quality images will be okay. But on a larger screen, they'll look pretty bad. I'd say there's not that much to worry about for audio material, but for videos and images, the bigger the better for sure! Smile

edit:formats for images can be bmp, jpg or ping. I would suggest everyone to avoid gif images, as their colors are limited.

Yes. For graphics avoid using *.gif files as they can only support 256 colors unless you're doing an animated gif. *.bmp (bitmap) files produces very large files. Use *.jpg (JPEG) instead to lower the file size but check the quality first. Your graphic software might compress it into lower quality (typically 72 w/c is used for the web w/ significant loss in quality) depending on the settings. Set it to 100. JPEG files do not support transparency. If you want photo quality graphics and with some transparent areas use the *.png (PNG) format.

PochinkoPotanko, what movie editing software are you using? I'm actually used to the *.mp3 format for audio (lower file size than *.wav) and *.mp4 format for video.

I mainly use Corel VideoStudio, sometimes Adobe AfterEffects and Premire. But the latter 2, I haven't totally mastered yet, so this time I'm sticking to VideoStudio. mp3 for audio I think I can handle, but for video wmv or avi would be much preferable. Come to think of it, avi would be the best IMO. mp4 I think is suitable mostly for videos to upload on the net, so I'm not sure...If anybody knows more about these things, please enlighten us! Embarassed

ilani, roma and PochiPota, thanks for clarifying about the images and the formats. I'll add them to the guidelines I posted on the first page of this thread.

PochiPota, September 10 seems too soon. Can't we push it to September 13 at least, Japan time?

Also, I'm not surprised that the Japanese fans are doing something for Mao on their own. I expected them to. I was actually thinking of asking anyone here if we wanted to send something to them so that we can combine our gifts, but a thread was created and the whole idea of international fans doing something special (and separate to Japanese fans) seemed appealing to everyone so I didn't bring it up.

Star85, if you can let us use your music, I'm sure Mao would appreciate it, and original elements created by the fans are sure to make her smile.

klarification, 13th is okay for me. I'm just worried for the person who'll be in charge of creating the DVD along with wrapping and sending it to Mao (mingming?). I think I'll be able to manage editing within a week at the most. It shouldn't take me that much time if I have all the materials by the 13th......................

Wait, guys! I just realized something. If we should create the message videos and other contents we'll be putting in the DVD in as high quality as we can, those files are going to be very very large. Which means, it will probabaly be close to impossible to pass it all on to the sender via email. We'd have to upload the contents on the net, and have the sender download it from there. But this is also a problem, as quite a few of you do not want your videos on the net. Also, since there are limits to the size of videos we can usually upload on the net whatever service we use, we'd have to lower the quality within them. This wouldn't be such a great idea when making a DVD.

So, I think you all don't have much of a choice but to have one person both edit, create a dvd and post it to Mao (well, we can only send it to JSF I think...all gifts for Mao have to be sent to JSF IIRC). I don't mind doing that as we have lots of unwritten DVDs in the house, and I have sent Mao DVDs with clips I made of her in it in the past, so I've done it all before.

But in this case, I'll be having pretty much to do, so I'd appreciate it if somebody can do the Japanese translation for the messages in text. The video messages, I will translate, as it will be easier to do so while editing at the same time. But it would be a great help if somebody can translate the text messages into Japanese and send them to me with the original language text before I start my editing part.

Also, if mingming can write a letter on behalf of all of us to send along with the DVD to Mao, I would love that. I'm probabaly going to be exhausted by the time the DVD is finished, so I don't think I would be the right person to prepare that. We definitely need a letter to go along with it. I will send mingming or whoever is willing to write the Japanese letter my address via PM, so he or she can send it to me when it is done. It can be sent to me even before the editing is finished, so I can post the DVD to Mao as soon as it's ready, too. This way, we can save alot of time.

In anycase, the deadline can be the 13th. There's no problem I think, if we are to proceed in this way. But we should wait a bit more for other suggestions. Someone might have a better idea or a different opinion, and others might want to do the editing as well. Yep!

But I will call on hanatsuki(she hasn't been around lately but we are keeping in touch at the Japanese forum), and see if she's available to help out on message translations becasue she is a professional at it! Thumbs up!

Pochi,if I want to make a blend and write a message in russian where, I need to give a translation to you?
