I was worried at first when inskate said Mao was going back to her old lutz technique which made her flutz. But you guys are probably right. She's probably just doing it for this competition since she's barely had anytime with her new coach to rework the jump. It's better to take the chance to flutz it than to pop it or fall. Guess they feel that there's too great of a risk of that happening if this is their strategy. No use in jeopardizing the competition more than they have to.

Thanks for detailed explanation inskate.

I agree that erasing the old technique is important. Mao said earlier when she was practicing with Mr. Nagakubo that her old bad habits still appeared despite her intention not to do so.

But, erasing old technique takes time. And improvement never takes place in a liner curve, I believe. I don't want to and shouldn't be so pessimistic, but I wonder if Mao's hit the bottom in terms of improvement curve already or not. I've heard that hitting the bottom is unavoidable for any athletes of any kind of sports before they start to make a true improvement when they are trying to change their forms and technique.

Takeshi Honda was on an NHK news program this morning and said as follows:
I watched her practice yesterday and I'm very impressed that her skating, each stroke, has improved very much. I believe this is because she's got Mr. Sato and returned to the basics. Her jumps are in good rhythm and each stroke slides very well. I think her condition is getting better.

I think this video clip will be on Youtube soon.

Another clip with better quality.

Her axels look great, she delays more before she rotates which actually helps her get more hight so she can complete the rotation.

I am so excited for tomorrow!!

I get your point linglang but I believe that as long as she keeps challenging herself and training hard as she does, believing in what she is doing, she will improve.
I say this not only for Mao but I believe this about every person, we can always get better Love Hearts Wub

OMG I can't wait anymore Panic! Good luck! Mao!

Like a Star @ heaven Anyone noticed it seems Mao has changed her last spin combo?

Thank you for the explanations, inskate! flower The one on "deep edges" is especially helpful because this term had always been rather ambiguous for me.

I too noticed the flutz and her body position. I am more worried about her overall technique of the jump rather than her edge at this moment. I think Mao will eventually get the edge right as long as she sticks with the better technique. Hmmm...

The clip maofan93 (Thank you so much! Razz) posted includes Mao's flip (for her SP) at 1:55. You can only see Mao's lower half and parts of her free leg. Maybe this can offer a good comparison to Mao's technique on the lutz. Cheering

ETA: The 3-3 seems fully rotated but the prerotation on her latter loop is huge, so am concerned about whether the tech specialist will DG it on those grounds. Grrr...

Mao's 3A, though still slightly UR at times is looking great. Her 2As/3As under Rafael had always been high and covered great distance, with good flow out of the jump. But she lost much of that after they parted. The height, distance and flow of the jump in this clip leaves me quite optimistic about Mao's training with Coach Sato. Cheering Cheering

Thank you linglang for Takeshi Honda's comments! Thumbs up! Excited to hear his compliments for Mao. Longing to see the improvements in the actual competition. Rockstar

Is it just me or do anyone feel that NHK TV's programs on Mao (in general) seem to be more pleasant than Fuji TV? The commentators sound genuine and grounded.

I remember i watched the Worlds in march over a livestream, but i cant remember what page that was, someting with pandora?
Maybe they will show it on keyHole TV? Clovera, do you know something about it? I know NTV+ link, but most likely it's only for Russia. http://tvali.ge/index.php?action=sat&channel=70954
I think it's better to stick with NTV+ for this event, since NHK General is only broadcasting the ladies' event live. That, and I'm sure tons of folks are going to be using KeyHole in order to watch as the NHK Trophy is the first GP event this season, which is never a good thing when KeyHole's feed is already pretty choppy to begin with. Time to prepare VPNs and proxies since I have zero faith in IceNetwork. Laugh

Hi guys! I've been away for a while because of some family matters...nothing serious. Sad
But tonight here in Japan, it's NHK Cup night and I'm totally Mao fan mode!!!! Cheering

There's been a press conference and open practice sessions yesterday, so some papers have written articles on Mao's condition. Here's one of them:

Daily Sports 22/10/2010

http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20101022-00000014-dal-spo

There was a press conference for the NHK Cup on the 21st in Nagoya, which was attended by Mao Asada, Kanako Murakami and Daisuke Takahashi. Asada promised that she will be jumping a 3A in the latter half of the program, although she had not been successful with it even during practice.

Mao will go on challenging. On the 23rd she will include one of her two 3As in the latter half of her FP. Though there had been news that she is not in good condition, she will not be changing that in her first competition in the comig GPS. "I haven't succeeded even in practice. I'm not sure what will happen in the competition. But I'll give it all I have", she said.
She did five 3As during each of the 2 open practice sessions. In the morning she succeeded only once. In the afternoon she succeeded all five. She was a totally different person after lunch. "Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it doesn't. I hope it goes well in competition...I'll just have to try and see" she said, and is well aware that her jumps aren't stable.
The disasterous Japan Open on the 2nd of this month, ended in her scoring the worst in her career. After then with coach Sato always by her side, she had practiced quite hard. "I think I'll be able to deliver a good performance at NHK Cup. I'd like to get better and better". She will be performing her SP on the 22nd, on her way to reclaim her reputation.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another paper called Sports Hochi reported her condition from a more optimistic point of view. They focused on the fact that she had succeeded all 5 of her 3As in the afternoon session, and also wrote that she succeeded her 3-3 too. But at the same time, Sato was quoted in saying 'She's getting a little better (than before)'. I have the impression that Sato is not the type of coach who'd blabber to the press that his students are in great shape even if they're not. He looks like a causious man in everything he does. So maybe even though he only said 'little better', Mao might be getting much better. But of course, when you consider consistency, he probabaly meant 'little better' as it is.

Honestly, I'm quite worried about tonight. I'm excited but worried. I can stand Mao ending in 2nd or 3rd, but if she turns out like JO and doesn't make the podium, I'll be damn blue. Even though I understand completely about her fixing her jumps and I totally support that, I still sould hate to see her not making the podium at least. Depressed Crying

I just hope things go well for her tonight. She may not be able to be perfect, but I believe she can pull herself together and give a performance which the audience could feel worth watching. Yep!

I am worried too. The one thing I can take comfort in is that many of the other ladies at this event are quite inconsistent as well, so it's likely she'll make the podium unless it's a total disaster. I am hoping that she gives a performance that is more like 2007 GPF, where she had problems with certain elements but others were fine, rather than what we saw last season or JO. Crossing my fingers. Drama!

Honestly, I am really worried too. Mao off the podium= please no! and I am very egoist...because I don't think I can even accept Kanako or Kiira win over Mao. The Japanese TV has been lately praising Kanako more than Mao as if she's the new star and Mao, the one we should forget. Very Mad

Don't mind the Japanese media - they are *always* like this. When Miki rose to prominence in 2004 they hyped her up like crazy, then shot her down during Torino and Worlds 08. Same thing happened with Mao beginning with GPF 09. Their next target is Kanako, and personally it's quite frustrating to see the whole cycle repeat again. Twisted Evil

And I think you're overreacting - in virtually all of the practice fluffs and news clips leading up to this event, Mao is still given #1 air time (as always) with Dai a distant second. Razz I for one would love to see Kanako and Yuzuru be legitimate podium threats too...the last time a female skater made a big splash during the GP series in their first year as a senior skater was CaroZ, and she quickly lost momentum soon after. No

ETA: That dress is definitely different. Shocked
