May be Mao afraid to say she's a 90%ready or near 100% just because of TEB. She was very positive about her winning there but actual competition turned out not so good like it was in practice. I guess this is the case.

I suppose it means her jumps are steady, but she doesn't feel confident about her 3A yet. Tell me guys one thing, Does she plan to do 3 toeloop in FS? She didn't do it so far, did she?

Mao sure does like to use percentages a lot. But I'm not sure how we should take it. Before TEB she said she was near 100%, so I feel it's quite arbitrary. We can only assume she is making progress in her practices. At this point, I don't care about the results so much. Maybe that's why I'm feeling less anxious than usual. I do want Mao to do well because she can feel good about her progress but there's a part of me that almost wish she wouldn't go to Worlds this year. I know Mao says she thrives on competition but I feel she's pushing herself a lot this year when it might have been better to pace herself a little. I may be in the minority here but I really think Mao needs a long break where she can really work her basics and jump technique. I remember Sato saying that they are going in two routes simultaneously. One is to improve her basics but the other is to prepare for competitions. I can't help wonder if they just choose to focus on the path of improving her basics, it will help her more in the long run. Also, with each setback in competition, she takes a toll mentally. It may cause her to develop a big mental block that even when her technique becomes more stable, she is unable to perform to her potential. She already says that whenever she thinks about the jumps, she tenses up. I believe this tension she feels is clearly influenced by the immense pressure she feels from her federation and the media to peform to expectations. Crying or Very sad

Personally, I don't think the pressure is coming from the JSF and the media (though they are probably not helping either). I think Mao feels stressed because SHE wants to do well; she's the one who hates to lose and wants to compete.

But I do agree with you that I kinda feel like it would be ok if Mao missed Worlds and had more time to rework her technique. I just hope that SHE can see that, if that is what happens. Neutral

Of course, I would be thrilled if Mao is able to put it all together and claim her 5th straight National title. flower But if she doesn't make it onto the podium, I just hope that she is not too crushed, and that she can use that disappointment to fuel her motivation. Yep!

Go Mao! Cheering We are here for you no matter what!

BTW, I started a thread exclusively for PBP/spoilers. So please do not post any spoilers/PBP here! (And no pics of Mao's face after her performance, please, because that tends to be a dead giveaway! Wink )

I want to watch the broadcast without knowing what happened first. Smile

I'm sure he's still there. I thought I saw him in the last video but I'd need to check to be sure... been a while. He seems to deal with the conditioning, while this video was focused on physical therapy... We saw a lot of different people in the last Weider video too. I'm guessing Mao's team grew a little! Wink

ETA: mmm I just watched the end of the video and there's this other dude training her... I hope it's temporary. I quite liked Makino-san. Very handsome! Razz Or maybe he's sort of in charge of a team of more specialized trainers for Mao now... scratch

chiyo-chan!!! Long time no see!! flower

You're right, Makki is still listed on the Weider website as part of Mao's team, but Kawanami-san (the nutritionist) is no longer there... Neutral
http://www.weider-jp.com/supportproject/mao_asada/staff/index.html

But I don't recall seeing Makki at NHK Trophy or TEB, which is weird since he was always by Mao in the past. Suspect You're right about him being rather handsome though. Perhaps they have replaced him with that rather nondescript guy to prevent any scandals?! lol!

Back onto the topic of Nat'ls--have you guys seen this video?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26Pl-RdjUGs

In the recent interview, Mao said that Nationals are usually good for her, and I was thinking "hmm, not really," but when I watched the video, I realized that Mao has finished in the top 2 at Nationals since 2004!! Thumbs up!

Gahh, I'm soo torn!! On one hand, I want Mao to maintain her winning streak, and on the other hand, I don't want her to stress out too much!! Whirly

I've seen recent pictures of Makino-san on the talking circuit and holding seminars at various institutions. The last time I checked the Weider website he was still listed as the supporting staff for Mao, so I think he's still Team Mao. But he may have been assigned to a consultant type of role seeing that as chiyori has pointed out, there's a different trainer for next week's segment.

As for the upcoming nationals- I'm very excited to be able to watch Mao compete again at the end of the year, but I really have no idea of what to expect. Mao has had great practice sessions that didn't necessarily translate into the competition. And it worked the other way as well, where she would have a bad practice and she'd win the competition.

I've read from a few blogs of people who have watched Mao over the years, that a more consistent benchmark might be to watch how she does in the warm-up on the day of. Like if she were to have a rough warm-up, then she tended to pop jumps. I can't really refute or agree with that theory because I've only watched her live once, so...

Personally, I would really love it for Mao to make it to worlds since it is in Japan, but as a lot of you guys have said, it wouldn't be bad either even if she didn't. I know whatever the outcome I'll still be proud of her. Razz

I skipped watching TEB on the dot because I know it would be bad for my heart. Sweatdrop

I know I have a lot of expectations on our Mao-chan and yet I also know, somewhat, that TEB is too soon to have the kind of progress I'm expecting of her. And here comes the Jap Nats. Is it going to happen tomorrow? That soon? And not that much media coverage? (Because, usually, as I browse through the various threads discussing Mao-chan's competitions, there will be various clips running about days before the competition...)

But I think this is a good thing, on my end though. This time, I do not have anything to base upon when I'm making my assumptions and expectations re: her performance at Nats. If we're seeing this much progress on her on a couple of months, I can see she can pull this off.

I really hope that Mao-chan would claim her fifth Nats title this year, despite these challenging times. Because only a Mao Asada can do that! Smile

Me too!! But unlike TEB, I have a feeling she will surprise us pleasantly this time around! Jap Nats is just like...I dunno, LIFE to her!! I can't explain it!! Smile

Hope my intuition is right, though!!

And since I do not know how to multi-quote yet (or is actually too lazy to explore Sweatdrop), thank you Dani-chan for the photos! Our Mao-chan is looking good!! I love her looking so refreshed like that! And is it just me, or is Miki-chan looking sexier by the minute? Smile

I'm so excite!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm looking for this competition even more than grand prix final (may be because I'm use Patrick will not win Japanese nation with falls hahaha ) Laughing

Can't wait for the competition. I hope Mao will give the performance that herself will be satified but if she bomb I will still love her and looking at the positive side it may be better that she will have the time to concentrate on reworking her technique instead of worry about world.

Also, hope every skates could skate thier best(especially my favorite Yuzuru kun). Anyone think Nobu can win this time?

With you practicing like that...

The article also says, she landed the 3A five times and had no falls or big mistakes in her entire practice.

Mao says, she managed to do everything she needed to do, her condition is good and represents no problem at the moment. She also said that she's feeling better than before last year's Nats.

That 3A was simply amazing!

I feel the same way! I actually don't want Mao to lose her title especially to Kanako! But at the same time, I really don't want her to push herself too much. But it's good to know that her practices are good and to see her land a good 3A! Woot!
